I have a Canon 40D. I am getting Err 05, The built in flash's auto popup obstructed. How do i resolve this?

- I'm getting an 05 error code when I try to pop the flash on my Canon 40D DSLR camera. It doesn't pop up at all and makes 3 distinct noises as if it's trying to pop up but can't. Turning it off and on again doesn't fix it and taking out the battery and putting it in again doesn't help. Can't seem to find any info on the internet either.
