Aloha, I have a WD (Western Digital) external hard drive with information from my old computer (which just crashed). However when I plug in the usb device not recognized - one of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it. I bought a brand new Dell laptop and I also updated all drivers...please help, please do not use tech terms, I am a novice...thank you
I have the same problem with the same device, I think the problem is some kind of stealth virus, as I plugged it in someones PC and it worked, the AV kicked in and found some viruses which it got rid of some and another it could not. My CA av didn't find anything. You just have to get someone that know more about window operating system setup, nearby to help to scan the Hard drive, by using window setup repairs gooluck

Wow, Im amazed at the guy who threw his WD into the freezer for a week after a fatal crash and was able to get most of his stuff back! I was so frustrated after my second WD crashed that I gave up and used it as a door stopper. I was too bummed out to even bother returning it for an exchange, and when I did think of doing that, it was too late. I decided never to buy WD again, their drives are pure junk! Your WD HDD have been attacted by viruses for your computer or outside computer where you used it last. Make sure that you have an up to date antivirus software, scan your computer or the external hard drive, explore your computer, go to tools - folder options under view files & folders select show hidden files and folders apply and ok it.
Take it back to where you bought it, and get a replacement,
or at least get them to demonstrate that it _does_ work, when connected to a Mac computer (not a Windows computer).
Hey, try connecting it o another computer and check if not yet, use only the WD USB transfer wire supplied in the box. because WD External HDD only recongize its own USB and none other.
Try a replacement USB cable first. If that does not fix the problem, then the USB to SATA adapter board is faulty, in that case you will need to take out the internal disk to replace the external enclosure.
HOW TO BYPASS THE CRAPPY SOFTWARE --------------------------------------------- 1. Install WD Smartware and update it. 2. Run Virtual CD (VCD) Manager at http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdsmartwareutilities to remove the virtual CD drive. 3. Use Control Panel add/remove programs to uninstall WD Smartware. 4. Everytime When you plug the hard drive in Windows will come up with the look for drivers window hit 'Cancel' 5. Now use it as an ordinary hard drive!
Could you be more specific? What do you mean "when I plug it into my computer?" Whay did you buy one..was there a problem with your existing one? Did you replace your old one or are you adding this new one to the other. Did you use the software that came with the new WD? Many details that you have ommited.

basically the drive has failed and some advance date recovery is necessary
