Paul -
This absolutely could be the ribbon cable connecting your screen to your motherboard. If you know how to check this, it would be worth trying before spending $150+ on an LCD. Any way you look at it, this is definitely a hardware issue. Just hope it's not the motherboard's onboard video card. Here is a modified answer I gave to a question similar to your issue:
If you turn on your laptop and the display is bad, your issue is with either the LCD screen or the motherboard (since the video card is built-in the motherboard). This will be easy to diagnose.
1.) Plug an external monitor (one which you know works) into the VGA port of your laptop.
2.) Turn on the laptop.
3.) Hold down the FN key (lower-left corner of the keyboard) and press the "CRT/LCD" key (it will be located on the number keys or F1-F12. You do this to tell the laptop that it needs to send the video signal to the external monitor instead of its built-in LCD screen.
If the display is good on the external monitor, then the issue is with the laptop's LCD screen (about $200 for the part plus labor to install). If the display is still messed up on the external monitor, then your problem is with the motherboard ($300-$500 for the part plus a lot in labor cost for installation).

Let me know if this helps you!

Starting up samsung x05

sounds as if you have a motherboard problem. If you are not comfortable in taking the bottom half of the case to see if that "crackaling noise" was.. then you can send it into samsung for repairs and estimate. If you are comfortable, first put your nose near a heat vent and see if it smells funny, like a little bit burnt. if so, its a gonner. You can look around once you remove the bottom pannals for burn residue or any signs of problems and report back if you need further assistance

White Horizontal line across screen

It is most likely the vertical deflection IC has overheated and lost its soldering. If you open your TV up, it is a 10-15 pin in a row IC sticking out of the motherboard attached to a heatsink. It should be labeled "IC451." Give it a wiggle, see if it affects the picture, You may have to resolder them in place.

The IC may be hard to find, look for a peice of metal that is sticking out of the motherboard, attached to a small chip. I fixed a samsung tv that had it in the middle area.

All I get is a white screen

I have a Samsung Syncmaster 175v Mfg Oct '03 displaying the __ White Screen . I removed the screws on the back , removed base stand, separated case with flat screwdriver starting at bottom, unplugged the small wire to the panel menu buttons , removed metal cover from back of LCD. Now you can see the powerboard \ inverterboard combo and the attached video signalboard. Follow the 30 wire plug to the LCD screen, the 30 wire plug goes under a metal panel , remove the 3 small screws securing the panel and you will see the hidden LCD screenboard. Very close to where the 30 wire plug attaches to this screenboard on the Rightside you will see with a magnifying glass a SurfaceMounted Fuse named F1 with a value? of "K". On my LCD the fuse tested with a volt-ohmmeter to be Open or Blown. The right thing to do would be to replace the fuse however I acquired my LCD from a trashcan / dumpster so I stretched a drop of solder connecting both sides of the fuse. Now I do not have the protection from power failures and surges that the fuse could offer but upon reassembly my screen works like new again .
PS : i'm not an expert at anything...x'cept maybe dumpster diving. God Bless
