Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

Error dc,uc and bangs during spin

I had a service technician over to troubleshoot my Neptune TL washer machine problem. To make a long story Longer, this guy didn’t know **** from shineola. He sold me and replaced a new displacement sensor. (This fix did not work) The serviceman came back again and said; “I think it’s the clutch??” I asked the serviceman; “How much is a clutch?” He said; “$177.00 not including labor” Now mind you, every time the serviceman came into my house to repair my Neptune TL, he had to call the Maytag service center help line. (Fool me once, shame on you, Fool me twice shame on ME) I told this guy to give me a reimbursement for the displacement sensor and then I’ll buy the clutch. He talked to his boss, and his boss told him: “I’ll give you a refund for everything, only if you come into our store and buy a new washer”.

I have a 4 year old Neptune TL, Model # FAV6800AWQ and this company wants me to buy a new washer machine (-:

PLEASE HELP….
Thank You,
Vic

Sorry dh1200s for taking so long getting back to you. I have become obsessed in trying to fix this (should be a class action suit) washing machine. I have replaced so far a displacement sensor, a new clutch and currently have the OD error message, which I guess I have to replace the (looking at the front of the washing machine) left lock? The reason I write that I need to replace the Left Lock, Is because while the machine is plugged in (and the OD error comes up) when accessing the Left lock, I disconnect the Left lock plug and re plug it in, and the washer will reset and start working again. I gave you the punch line before the JOKE...My wife and I went out to buy a new washer. We got a great deal!! We really did. My obsession still would not go away though. We came home after our purchase of the old style (turn style, click, click, click) washing machine. I told my lady that we got 3 days before delivery, I'm going down to the basement to give it one more college try. I discovered two things that beautiful night: I thought I solved all the problems with my Neptune:

First: The displacement sensor was not connected to the frame. This enabled me to do 5 loads without the banging and UC/UD errors.

Second: The OD error showed up, which as I'm sure you can appreciate that took the wind out of my sails. (thinking that I fixed all the problems of the world LOL LOL) SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO while the machine was ON, In desperation...un plugged the LEFT lock and plugged it back in...Only to discover that this has temporarily fixed my problem. Over Dose comes back, but I think it's BECAUSE I ONLY NEED TO REPLACE THE LEFT LOCK???

    STAY TUNED,

    Vic

I have posted many times on this forum my fix, if you have basic mech. skill sets you could try my maintenance fix. There was no real out of pocket cost I had a can of WD-40. If you can’t tackle, direct the service tech to a possible troubleshooting solution. See my post of 12/15 at this link, it has worked for a few forum members.

Also have te svr tech read my comment of 1/19 in my trying to understand why the machine gives dc/UC errors in spin cycle.
Found clutch on ebay for this machine; http://cgi.ebay.com/12002211-NEW-MAYTAG-Washer-Pulley-and-Clutch-ASSY_W0QQitemZ110334944433QQcmdZViewItem

There are supplier links at this site for parts,
Good luck.

    Vic,

No problem, I’m a owner DIY’er and I almost triggered on a new machine purchase. I canceled the order and decided to roll my sleeves up and give it a try. My first and only issue was easy, clutch re-lube. I haven’t experienced OD or OP errors which seem to be caused by lack of Lid Open or Lid Closed signaling from the left hand lid latch back to the control board by the reed switch in the Left Hand lid latch. I believe you are going in the right direction. Check the left hand lid latch for corrosion on the male pins and socket pins I have attached a link to the fixitnow DIY forum. This person was experiencing OP errors, key in on the black wire that came off the reed switch. I can simulate the OD errors by starting three quick cycles without opening the lid as the Troubleshooting and Service Manual describes. I can also simulate the OP alarm by pulling the lid magnet out of its holder located in the lid. If you don’t take a OP alarm I feel the lid magnet is in place. I’m going to revisit the schematic for this machine, not sure why you would take OD errors without OP error. I assume you have the Service Repair manual for this machine; if not go to servicematters.com, Maytag repair, agree to terms, and type in your model number to bring up your machine. First line item is your SM, also some info in there on the clutch issues related to dc/UC error codes.

Good for you on trying to repair this machine. Let me know how you make out and good luck.

    Vic , just another tidbit.

I posted back to this forum member a little process I'm trying to put together to help forum members troubleshoot dc/UC errors with the FAV6800A. If you don’t get a svr repair person that is knowledgeable on this machine they may shotgun parts. Not their fault just not enough hands on experience. Here is the link.

    http://www.fixya.com/support/t1612027-ma...

Also it’s a pain to do this test with the top open, if you take a couple 1” dia magnets and lay them on the left bumper of the machine you can close the reed switch and signal the control board the Lid Is Closed and have lid open to view wash basket in spin cycle/wash cycle. You just need to push in left or right latch about ¼” to clear the lid open alarm, don’t push too hard or the latch pin will retract and you may need to restart the process. Now you can view the wash basket operation without open the washer top. Round magnets I used were key/pot holders from my fridge.

Guest, If you are taking dc/UC errors see this link, if you can’t troubleshoot and call in a Service Repair person have them follow this process. I and a few other forum members have found the clutch to be the issue most time, my humble opinion.

Read the troubleshooting info in my comment of this post. Maybe you can steer your Repair Tech to read this if they say you need to replace the Clutch or Tube Displacement Sensor. Have them explain the troubleshooting reason for any parts replacement related to dc/UC errors. I did not have hard failure of the clutch, just needed a re-lube of clutch bearing. WD-40 maintenance fix under $5 if you have to buy.

Good luck and please feel free to call out again for support.

What's the purpose of the tub displacement sensor

To detect excessive wash tub movement and shut down the wash cycle. Here is a copy of my post from a real DIY forum;

Google this Neptune TL Washer FAV6800AWW 5 post down.

Here ya go.....in this post I discuss the issue related to unbalance error codes DC and UC;

Your FAV6800A or FAV9800A is going off balance with DC or UC unbalance error codes during spin cycle and you see/hear the wash tub banging around at the start of Spin Cycle of the wash cycle or a Spin Only cycle. If this is the condition the TDS (Tub Displacement Sensor) is working as designed and signaling the Control Board properly of an unbalance wash load condition.

The Control Board receives a varying D.C . Voltage from the TDS sensor and if the out of range D.C. Voltage limit continues the Control Board will halt the Spin Cycle and try to redistribute the wash load. If you are interested I will show you how to monitor the TDS input to the Control Board with a DVM.

The Control Board then starts the Spin Cycle again. If the wash tub/basket out of balance condition continues the Control Board will attempt another redistribute of the wash load. After several attempts (4 to 5 I believe) the Control Board will shut down the Spin Cycle and send a error code DC or UC to the LED display of the FAV6800A, my machine type. And I believe a text statement to the LCD screen of the FAV9800A machine i.e. something like "Unbalance Condition" I'm not sure what the text message is.

If you need help open a post in that repair forum and I will try help you through your issue.
The forum is free and my time is free I just don

Neptune Washer Spin Cycle

If your FAV6800A or FAV9800A wash tub is banging around in Spin Cycle of the Wash Cycle and your Control Board signals a dC or uC error code to the console I feel you have a Clutch malfunction. I feel the TDS is working as designed with the unblance error code shut down.

What is your machine model number? Is it a FAV6800A or FAV9800A TL?

If it’s a FAV6800A or FAV9800A TL do you error out in the Spin cycle of the wash cycle with an unbalance error code such as dC or uC? Is the wsh tub banging around during Spin Cycle of the Wash Cycle?

If so see this post Clutch Fix. I have a step by step maintenance/repair process for Clutch Pulley assembly issues related to the above error codes.

Maytag Neptune washer has the error code of UC during the spin cycle. What is the problem?

in the Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer Forum so I assume the machine type is a FAV6800A or FAV9800A correct?

Most issues are caused by a Clutch malfunction if the machine errors out with dC or UC unbalance error codes during the spin cycle. If your wash tub is banging around during a Spin Cycle and the TDS and Control board are working as designed the Control Board will shut the machine down with an unbalance error code dC or UC.

If the machine model is a FAV6800A LED console or a FAV9800A LCD console version it can be fixed with basic hand tools and some DIY effort. If you call in a repair service you are looking at $300 to $400 ballpark if they have a clue of how to troubleshoot the issue. If you DIY cost could be $0 if you have a can of WD-40 around a dab of lithium bearing grease to $75 ball park for a Clutch Pulley replacement.

See this post Clutch Fix and if you want to DIY and save/extend the service life of your 1$K machine.

If your machine is a FAV6800A to FAV9800A here is the Service Manual.
If it one of those machines I suspect a possible clutch malfunction.

See this post for what is involved to do clutch maintenance or replacement.

Do you have any error codes to the display if it's a FAV6800A such as dC or uC unbalance codes. Is the wash tub banging around on Spin Cycle of the Wash Cycle? ……Rich

Error code of "dc" on my TL Maytag Neptune

If your machine is FAV6800AW or FAV9800AW the dc/UC errors are caused by a clutch malfunction. Your machine is shutting down with those errors so your Tub Displacement Sensor is working as designed.

Fix the Clutch malfunction and you can wash a single sock or a load of blue jeans and you will not take the dc or UC unbalance errors. See this post for the fix.

Post back if you have questions or need help.

1 Answer

Neptune won't advance from Rinse to SPIN

If the clutch fails the first thing noticed is a UC or DC error displayed and there is no drain or spin.

If you are seeing the above error and having a problem with spin and drain then the most likely cause of this is the clutch. The clutch fails to lock down the spinners and the basket is unable to go into spin and without a 90 RPM there is no drain.

Replace the clutch.
