Slow Slow Notebook (Acer Travelmate 290 CL51)

I recently was given an Acer Travelmate 290 model CL 51 laptop. I don't want to put any money into it if none is necessary but it runs as slow as molasses. (And yes, I know its not a new model...) So will I see an improvement in speed if I upgrade the current 500 MB Ram? Is there something else I should do to help it run faster? If so, what type of ram should I get? (inexpensive if possible.) Thanks for the help!

    Wow... Had no idea so many responses would come so fast. lol Thanks for all your input... will take them all into consideration and work through them one by one... Was thinking of doing a fresh install/reformat of the hard drive and only installing XP Service Pack 1... Was also looking at possible memory upgrades... Found this at Bestbuy... Good? Bad? Any opinions? Thanks again for all the help!

Mostly laptop runs slow issue occurs due to broken Windows registry entries. Fixing registry will help you to boost up your laptop. You need to download and install a Registry Cleaner program to fix corrupt or broken registry entries. To download a reliable registry cleaner, go to famous website download.cnet and search there Reginout. Which I personally use and recommend the friends. After downloading run all of its tools one by one except Internet Optimizer, to clean all the junks and registry errors from your computer.

  1. Run an antivirus such as (Spybot search and destroy) just click the link,download ,install,update,imunize and run.
  2. Remove any and all programs that are not needed or wanted.
  3. Download,install, and run CCleaner
  4. Run disk clean up.
  5. Defrag hardrive.
This should help until you find some ram.

Well, upgrading the ram COULD help, firstly before spending any money run a disk defrag by right clicking the drive and going to tools, also note that their may be viruses on the computer so downloading AVAST and running the preboot scan would help ALOT. the easiest way is to run a recovery but you would need either the recovery discs or a fresh windows install disk (preferably xp) that should do the trick my friend, if you have any issues please let us all know

Have you tried removing the battery and running just on AC power. This fixed my speed problem. Don't know yet if a new battery will fix it permenantly.

Install only an XP service pack 1 to improve your laptop performance.
(unless you really need the higher service pack)
you can download it from here:
http://fenopy.com/torrent/WINDOWS_XP_PRO_sp1_KEYLESS_INSTALL_cracked_by_XBETAS/MTMzMjEwNA==/index.html

install only necessary aplication

and install
tuneup utilities2009
from here:
http://fenopy.com/torrent/TuneUp_Utilities_2009_v8_0_1100_Cracked_TE__h33t__MAMBO04_/MTY0NTYxMw==/index.html

then remove the unecessary startup aplications by tune up startup manager

then run TuneUp 1-Click Maintenance
it's will solve your problem

and can speed up your system little bit

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Boot problem with acer travelmate 290 model CL51, only bios working.

if a computer boot up only until the windows xp screen not on windows environment...usually it is because of corrupted system...

your pc will never boot until the logo if there is a problem in your video card,sound card,memory or power supply...

so i suspected that there is a problem in your operating sysyem..try to run system restore if you have...

if not you need to format your operating system so that you can use your laptop again...

note: i have also experienced a problem with boot until the windows logo, but i found out that the problem is not the operating sytem...i found out that my client's capacitors in his motherboard are damaged...maybe due to over use or improper cooling system...if you can check it that's much better so that you can prevent waste of money...
