What operating system are you running?

If it is Windows XP you can go up to 4GB. More with Vista.

However 2 GB should be sufficient and you will notice a spike in performance and load times.

RAM's or Memory module cannot improve speed. It improves your memory capacity, The more Ram you have the smoother your applications will run. If You wanna see speed improvement, also upgrade your CPU, and Hard Disk Drives. Faster CPU and Hard Disk means faster processing and Data access and retrieval.

Low RAM

your p.c has four slots for ram 533Mhz. if your ram is low then you can purchase extra ram to speed up your computers processing power. either 512Mb or 1Gb sticks are available for your motherboard at 533Mhz. if this is not sufficient then you will have to upgrade your board to a newer more powerfull model. changing motherboard is not replacing the whole computer. see computer repair shop or vendor.

I have 256 MB RAM which is slow, can i upgrade it to 512 MB RAM

Depends completely on what motherboard the computer has and what it supports, I could check on it if you have and brand and model of the computer, or from the motherboard.

Sure the prosessor speed doesn't affect the memory amount possible don't worry about that, just need to find out how much is supported and at what speed etc.

Thanks,
Ekse

Travelmate 290 model CL 51 will not boot, no display, fan on for a few seconds, hdd light on, odd light on,power light on.Help please

Riiiight, why is this in the Desktop category again? So it acts on, but you can't see it; perhaps it's the backlight that has gone out (probably from its particular supply or EL component failing)?  Get some good light on it and see if there's a pattern in black, or try to attach another display and see what comes up.
Also; since the HDD light is on...I don't suppose you hear any HDD activity?

Hi. I have a TravelMate 5620 which has a sticker on it saying 5625WSMi. It had 1Gb memory. I've purchased 2 x 2Gb RAM as found on internet it can handle up to 4Gb. I replaced the 1Gb RAM with one of...

Sometimes, one memory slot can be on the opposite side of the motherboard, under the keyboard. Try removing the keyboard and look under there. If that doesn't help, let me know and I'll look it up in the service manual.

Thanks and please take a moment to rate as fixya.

I have a acer travelmate 290 and when i push the power button he start and right after this the processor stop (wont boot) and the light of the cd at the top of keyboard stay open please help me...

It could be many reasons. But worst one could be CPU fan failure. If your CPU fan is not working properly then your computer wont boot but most imp thing is, it could damage your processor coz of overheating.
Another reason may be faulty ram, motheboard problem, hardware failure etc.
so cant say for sure but make sure ur fan is cooling ur processor.
Hope it helps

No, usually, your PC if you have an integrated video card, will take away from your installed ram for 256mb of video dedication. Everything should be fine.
