I have the exact same problem using any browser or user on my Windows XP SP3.

AVGFree, NOD32 and AdAware didn't find anything but SpyNoMore found a trojan (in the hidden dir resycled on the c-drive) - but when I removed everything SpyNoMore found the problem still remained.

It is supposed to open the browser. Windows Update is a website on Microsoft that interacts with your computer to see what updates you have and which ones you don't have. It will then list the High Priority updates along with optional ones.

You can click on this link:

http://www.update.microsoft.com/

Add it to your favorites once it opens.

Not sure why Google would open with Windows Update though.

If you like, I could talk you through changing your Windows Update shortcut. Let me know via a comment.

OK, if you can get to Microsoft put your mouse cursor over "Security and Updates" at the top and then click on "Microsoft Update".

Let me know if that works.

Man, this is one crazy problem!

Do you have the Google Toolbar installed?

If so, uninstall it through the Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs.

If you don't have it, I'll think some more.

Have you run a thorough virus/spyware scan lately?

USB drives can be write-protected by modifying the StoreageDevicePolicies Registry key and WriteProtect Registry value.
click Start>run>regedit to open Registry Editor. and press control+F to open the find dialogue box and type "usb device" or "driverdesc" to open usb mass storage device or type "usb mass storage device" in the search windows. And right click on it and delete. This will set the policy value to 0. then insert your usb device. It will work fine.

Drivers for xp needed

cnetdownload.com on the home page you should see the download software finder under that there will be a list platform, category, sub category , price, from the category drop down list select drivers then from the price drop down list select free or which ever applies to your need hope this helps dont forget to vote also you might

http://download.cnet.com/drivermax/3000-18513_4-10572602.html
Behind a slick interface, this program backs up all your PC's drivers in case you mess up something fierce. From registration to implementation, DriverMax works fast, runs smooth, and does even more than mere backing up.
When you run the app, it asks you if you'd like to run the trial version or apply for a registration key. The key is free, though, requiring only an e-mail address and your name. Once you've entered the key, the program interface appears, with slick button navigation: Driver Operations, Updates and Identification, and Popular Hardware. Mousing over one reveals more choices, so you can export your drivers, import drivers, or view an installed drivers report.
Updates lets you update both the DriverMax software and the drivers themselves, although as of this writing there is a warning label on the DriverMax Web site that downloads are not currently functioning. The program can also identify unknown hardware and point you in the direction of popular hardware options, pointing users to a compilation of statistics about different video cards and processors.
The strongest features, though, relate to driver backup and reinstalls. They function smoothly, offering users the option to back up all drivers or compile a customized list. Reinstalling an "accidentally" deleted driver was as pain-free as could be. As of the version 4.4 update, the DriverMax Agent, which automatically scans for driver updates, works in Windows XP and Windows Vista 32-bit, but not 64-bit. This is a great utility tool that should appeal to newbies, advanced hackers, and everybody in between. Hope this helps don't forget to vote

Unable to find Mass Storage Controller Driver

The mass storage controller is generally for usb devices that you've plugged in. USB keys, memory cards etc.

This kinda falls under the realm of the USB drivers for your mainboard... which if they're working, you don't need to do anything. XP service pack 2 supports USB2 just fine, but service pack 1 will require you to get your manufacturers drivers to get USB2 working at full-speed.

Why do you want to change the default driver anyway??
