Question about Mitsubishi WS-55805 55" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Convergence........... My 10 year old Mitsubishi 55805 has a new twist to the convergence problem. When turned on, it gets no broadcast picture but the input mode shows with seperated colors, and it pulsates for about 30 seconds then is steady. The menu will come up but shows the arched lines and seperated colors. When convergence adjustment is selected, it will not adjust in either dirrection. The IC's have been replaced and all the fuses/voltage levels are OK and the circuit board re-resoldered. ?Next best guess the conv gernerator circuit board? THANKS

The work was done by a professional who seemed to know his way around. He said all fuses were good and when the IC's were replaced, none of the symptoms changed. He even tryed a second set of IC's!

  • brucemorriso Jan 24, 2009

I should add that the repairman thought it must be the conv-gene plug in module (about 4" square) that is located just behind the IC's

  • brucemorriso Jan 24, 2009

I have the skills but not the knowledge of where to measure voltages, but when the repairman was doing his thing, he mentioned several voltages and said they were all good.???

I am willing to try one, any idea of a part number and where to get one? Thanks for your help!

Did you replace the tw0 5 amp pico fuses F9A04 and F9A05 as they usually open when an IC fails

I would check the supply voltages into the ICs andthen the output voltages. That would either confirm r rule out the convergence generator Board

If the suppliues wee good its most likely the geerator which is defective

11 1/2 year old Mitsubishi WS-55805 - 55 in rear projection TV has convergence issues as the colors are starting to shadow. Trying to weight the cost of repair or replace. Any suggestions?

This model should use two of the STK392-040 convergence IC chips.
Parts cost on Ebay for a pair of these is under 35 dollars.

Repair does involve soldering and removal of middle board in order to get at the parts.

I have step by step instructions for a similar model that is available.

If you or someone you know can do the repair you can save a lot of money and the set.

These sets are much more reliable than the Plasma and LCD type sets.

Here in San Diego most shops get about 200-300 for this repair.

It can be done in your home, I have done hundreds of them in homes.

If you want to see the instructions let me know and we will find a way to get them to you.

Before you rate this information let me know if you have questions.

My bigscreen TV Mithsubishi model WS-55805 just

First thing I do on these is to disconnect power cord, pull off the front speaker grill and remove the small door covering the tubes. Get a bright light and look for coolant leaking down from the metal shields that cover the high voltage anode on the picture tubes. There is a chamber on each tube that contains ethylene glycol or antifreeze to keep the tubes from overheating. Sometimes the gaskets get a leak and coolant drips down onto the circuit board. Look very closely at the board to see if there are any drips below the tubes. If this is the case you may consider replacing the set but some can be saved by cleaning the board and sealing the leaks. Have a pro look at the tv if this doesn't help because all you can get online is a guess. Second thing that could cause this is a failure in the vertical or convergence circuit that would entail part replacement at a cost of 200-300. If you find no coolant on the circuit board that means the convergence circuit or the vertical circuit needs to be rebuilt. These sets are known for having bad capacitors on the boards that eventually have to be replaced when a failure occurs. Good luck, Russmann.

Mitsubishi WS-55805 CRT projection TV with

This problem is most likely caused by damage in the convergence output amp IC's; this model uses STK392-040. Fairly common for various fuses that protect the DC supplies for these amp IC's to open as well.

I have a WS-55805. Was working great, then suddenly no picture, just audio. When I press the Menu button, I get the menu but I see three separate colors for each menu item. Could this be the lamp, or...

This TV does not have a single lamp but a set of CRT tubes.

If you get menu displayed on wrong clors or colors are not matching then it is either a bad CRT, a bad CRT high voltage power board, or sometimes a problem with convergence board and convergence ICs, however in this last case you usually get no picture and no sound .

Convergence issue

These sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the picture to look normal. This is called convergence.

When its out of alignment the video will look 3-D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired. Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung,JVC,Philip Magnavox,Panasonic,Akai,Pioneer, Hitachi,Mitsubishi,Zenith and others.
You can get more information and a DIY convergenece repair kit with instructions from the link below.

Here are some of the most common problems with these sets...

Problem #1) Convergence

Yours may have one or more of the following symptoms...

*Screen Looks 3-D
*Colors wont align
*Screen may look distorted or warped
*No Audio/Video - TV Shuts down - May also make a constant chirping sound

Problem #2 - Another common problem is dull or washed out video.

Your set may have one or more of the following symptoms....

*Dull looking picture
*White looking picture
*Halos around objects
*Red/Orange looking picture

Its been a long time since I did it, but I believe you can adjust the green convergence grid by using the service menu. I found instructions on doing this over on the avsforum message board (years ago) so you might want to search there.
