Question about Acer Aspire 5100 Notebook

1 Answer

Not Responding The history: I have an Acer 5100 laptop from 2007 Two weeks ago it failed. The tech told me the only thing I could do was to use the partition to reinstall the operating system (which I did). But this meant (stupid me) I didn't have any recovery disks. Long story short--I had to send it in for warranty work--they replaced the hard drive and fan (supposedly). I got it back and it had the original (so I thought) software on it. I got it back a few days ago and have loaded stuff on it. I notice the keyboard gets very hot. It also doesn't always catch all my letters when typing and will often give a twirling ball and show the webpage as "Not Responding". It takes forever to do anything. Is this a software or hardware issue? Or both? What do I need to do to fix it? I'm ready to pitch it out the window! Help!!!

I've kept the windows settings up to date since that was my first thought.

The problem with bringing it back in:

    Circuit City did the repair

I do not have back up disks (they didn't ask for them, and just installed the software that came with the computer originally somehow)

The techs taking over for Circuit City--Assurance Solutions--first asked me to send it in--then told me it was probably a software issue and I had to send in the back up disks (I don't have them--and wouldn't you need new backup disks for a different hard drive anyhow?). I'm not a techy--I don't know what the issue is or isn't.

So that's where I stand. Do you think the Defrag would do any good? I tried it early on and it didn't help. Any other suggestions?

  • bidrequest Jan 24, 2009

I don't have any CD backups

I did a recovery when it first failed and it worked for a day or two (after I had reloaded much stuff) then failed totally.

so I believe they installed a new hard drive (but since it's CC didn't get any paper work and the new techs are not likely to have/give me that info)

I will try a defrag (but tried that originally with no luck)

    Mozilla-don't think so--why?

  • bidrequest Jan 24, 2009

This did nothing. No device issues. The defrag is set to go off every Wednsday. But I did it again. I still have all the same issues. I don't think I should set MSN as my home page. This shouldn't make a difference.

  • bidrequest Jan 24, 2009

I'm not sure what you mean by diagnose connection, but all it does is stop and the webpage says (Not Reponding)...sometimes if I hit escape multiple times it will bring it back but it still take some time to get it to type and work again.

  • bidrequest Jan 25, 2009

I have done these and nothing has helped. Any other suggestions. I'm in CST.

  • bidrequest Jan 25, 2009

I tried this and it didn't work. I'm in CST. Thanks for all your help so far.

  • bidrequest Jan 25, 2009

I'm here and it's a.m. morning. What's the next step?

  • bidrequest Jan 25, 2009

I typed it in and the website came up. Let me know.

  • bidrequest Jan 26, 2009

It helped a little--I think--but hasn't resolved the issue. The not responding happens on ALL websites not just one.

  • bidrequest Jan 26, 2009

Thanks for your help. There's nothing there.

  • bidrequest Jan 27, 2009

Do you have any other thoughts since none of these seem to have worked?

  • bidrequest Jan 29, 2009

I don't have the money to upgrade right now. Just want to fix the problem.

  • bidrequest Jan 29, 2009

where is bios setup-what will this do to the rest of the computer? it started only when I got it back.

  • bidrequest Jan 30, 2009

Thanks for all your help. But I decided to take it into the shop. If it's not repairable I need a new one and if it is I'd rather have someone who knows what their doing work on it. Thanks for taking all this time to help me out.

  • bidrequest Jan 30, 2009

He thought it was a configuration problem.

If you just had it for repair I would take it back
the twirling as you call it is in your mouse settings.
you can try to do a winupdate let windows find the updates then make sure you install the recomendations.
THEN DO A DISK DEFRAG
see if that helps
your keyboard should not be hot
please let me know if any of this helped

maybe you can upgrade your memory

what windows di you say you are using

  • DEKR
    DEKR Jan 29, 2009

i am wondering if it's your memory

can you go to bios setup and restore every page to default

then press F10 to save and exit

did you tell me it only started doing this after you got it back or before you sent it in

  • DEKR
    DEKR Jan 29, 2009

the setup is entered usually fom pressing delete F2 or F1 or F12 during startup

I believe yours would be F2 then a page appears with all your informmation for your pc at the bottom you'll see some default options choose default then F10 to save and exit.

usually omstartup of pc it tells you what to press for setup

I am thinking maybe you need a new cmos battery or memory

It also may be your internet connection is weak

  • DEKR
    DEKR Jan 30, 2009

    OKAY

WELL LET ME KNOW IF FIND OUT IT WAS CMOS BATTERY OR

    MEMORY

  • DEKR
    DEKR Jan 31, 2009

or windows config but i already walked you through the steps for windows configuration.

I JUST HOPE YOU CAN GET IT FIXED

Sounds like the power jack is loose if you have to hold it in a certain position. As for the screen your inverter might be shot. Try connecting an external monitor to your laptop and see if you get a display.

Acer freezes and slow speed

Eliminate physical problems first. Make sure you have no heat issues or defective hardware. Next, note what software is installed on the machine. Was there toolbars or unrecognized programs on it now that werent there 2 weeks ago? Finally, note who uses the machine. Some people dont pay attention to what they do when surfing the net, or you may have someone visiting poisoned websites. Narrow the field, and the problem will reveal itself.

Battery drains

This is most likely a bad battery. The battery has a built in discharge circuit that keeps the battery from draining when the machine is off. I'd say the this has malfunctioned, and that a new battery will fix the problem. Let me know.

if the clock is consistently being resetted then most likely you have a failing cmos battery. you need to dismantle the laptop in order to have access to the cmos battery. you need to fina a COIN type battery.

Forget my bios password

on the underside you can take off a panel with a screw driver by unscrewing the philips head screw, and from there, you should find a small, flat, round looking battery, it may be in a yellow or black coating. you have to disconnect this, and then reconnect it. this will reset your bios.
