I have a compaq laptop that the screen is dark but beyond the darkness you can see my stuff on the screen, i took it to a repair shop and they said it wasnt the backlight or inverter what else could be the problem. thanks.
It is possible that the problem is in the video card - that it's just not turning on the backlight. But it's so much more common for it to be the backlight or inverter that I'd try to get a second opinion.

What is wrong with the backlight? The computer screen is just dark? I would start with the inverter. The inverter is usually the problem when the screen goes dark but people think it is the backlight. The backlight alone is very hard to change too. Go with the inverter, I would bet that is the issue.
press F5 in the keyboard the light should be back or check the keyboard in the computer in the top botton where you see a sun design press that one you shoul have two of those 1 for put the light dark and the other one for put the light back good luck
the number of these i have fixed..... i'm 95% sure its the backlight, though it could have some underlying issues with the connectors on the motherboard, and a slight possibility of it being the graphics chipset, check if its under warranty with compaq, if it is have them walk you through thier troubleshooting, and have it sent off to them, they will get ya fixed and on your way, try a power cycle though. pop out the battery and pull out the cord, then hold the power button down for a minute and put the battery and ac adapter back in, if it dont work call compaq. :D cheers
First Run a diags on the dell laptop. You can initiate it by pressing fn+power button together and start the laptop. It will go to the diags screen. Tell me if the diags pass or not and then we will troubleshoot further. Thank you Rakesh Dell Laptop Expert
Sounds like the auto-dim in the BIOS is set too low. Fortunately the Compaq R3000 allows you to adjust the brightness right from the keyboard. Hold down the [FN] function key while tapping the [F8] key will brighten the screen, while [FN]-[F7] will dim it. The settings are different for running on AC power and battery, so you must do each individually.
does the fan work ok? and do you have a laptop holder for it or you just have it on a desk ....get a laptop holder for it if you do not have one and as for the rest goto the power mangment area on the computer and see if the monitor might be on stand by after a few min ...
