I've had the unit for less than a year. It worked just fine until now.
I have not used it for about three weeks, it was in the car glove box.. Today I tried to turn it on. No luck. A sales rep says the battery may need to be charged.
I plug it into the car outlet every time I use it. Why then sould it need recharging. I turn it off each time I use it.
Check for voltage at the end that plugs into the cradle. If no voltage there, check glass fuse inside end that plugs into car plug. If there is voltage at the cradle end and it still doesn't turn on then it's the cradle. The cradle fails over a short time inside the cradle plug. You can hard solder the cable end to the cradle circuit board, which is a delicate procedure which I have perfected but I am an electronics person. If you want to buy a new cradle it will fix your problem for turning on the gps but I recomend a cable tie on the cradle cable end to stop the strain on the connector so the new cradle connector will last a long time.

Your battery is faulty, probably caused by the non tomtom charger.
Ring tomtom on 08451610009 as the unit is 6 months old and they will repair it free of charge. DON'T tell them about the other charger.
White lined screen is a battery problem
All you have tomis manually reboot it, they get froze up like any computer . Turn it off, then when you turn it back.on keep on button depressed while it boots up all the way through the cycle for about 15 seconds , then release, should work fine after that, let me know, thanks Mike
There is a reset button on the 255 i on the bottom right edge as the unit
faces you, and is underneath the serial number sticker. You'll either
have to peel the sticker up for access or poke a hole through it. This should get you going again. I am am also attaching a link to garmin support. Let me know how you made out. Thanks for using FixYa
Disable the WAAS on your unit. A new satellite was launched earlier this year and is causing a problem. This is why Garmin issued a new software update version 3.9. Menu > Setup > System... scroll down to WAAS and disable it. This should get your unit working again but with less accuracy.
Update the software to version 3.9 and leave for about 20 minutes in open area (clear view of sky) so your unit can download the full almanac. This should permanently fix your problem. Once you finish upgrading, go back and enable the WAAS.
to mhotz: You can purchase serial2USB connectors at a computer store. You will have to install the drivers which come with it before it will work. That should solve your upgrade problem.
Had same problem found solution here: www.magellangps.com/support/askmaggie.asp which was to press the reset button on left side of unit - second up from bottom. (need to do it with a pen) Cheers Eagledawn
"unit turns on and off with the ignition switch, sometimes."
There is something wrong with your power cord or the connection to the cigarette lighter. Your unit should turn on and off with the ignition switch. If the unit is on and doesn't turn off with the ignition switch then your unit is running on battery. If your unit doesn't turn on with the ignition switch then the unit is not getting power from the cigarette lighter.
