Question about IBM 3500 Typewriter

1 Answer

Keys don't match what types. Letters type other letters.

I dug out our old IBM Wheelwriter 3500 by Lexmark today and my toddler banged on it a while while I did something else. Now, when I went to use it, the letters on the keyboard did not match the letters that printed. And we can't find the manual, though I remember keeping it for years and years in one place. It must have something to do with the code, in green. Does anyone have a user manual that can help me reset the whole typewriter back to regular matching keys? Unplugging it and turning it off and on doesn't help. Thanks.

You probably have a broken solenoid cap. You will need to order the cap but I do not know who has a video or instructions to do it.

IWhen i turned it on it only types half the letters/numbers etc

If it is only typing the top half of the letters the platen may not be fully seated in the side frames, push down firmly on both ends of the platen it should snap into place.

Only typing half letters and numbers

On the WheelWriter series, sometimes the platen may pop out of position, causing only half the letters to print. If this is the case, easially solved... Using the left and right platen knobs, firmly push down to lock it back in place. Hope this helps....MediaMan
