Need 2 install the fastest PIII processor possible on CpxJ650GT

Dell Latitude CPx J650GT Laptop. I have a PIII processor chart showing front side bus speeds at 100mb and 133mb aligned with the Processor Ghz speed and multiplier. I have many PIII mobile processors and need to install the max Ghz processor possible. I will make a cd disk for the new processor bois needed. I understand a fair amount of hardware knowledge, and have Scott Muellers Upgradng and Reparng PC's. As long as both are socket 370 processors can I go to the highest PC100 processor to 900 or whatever the top PC100 Ghz is or better yet can I install a PC133 which goes as high as 1.4Ghz. I am already running a matched set of 256mb chips to be at 512MB wth XP-SP3

I have never overclocked before but can get to the info to do it. Isn't there an overclocking percentage limit due to a thermal problem that starts occurring. Wouldn't a faster processor be better than this. An electronics lab rough service computer builder told me that effiiciency of thermal heat control is why overclockiing is a risk; and to step up the processor to increase speed not overclock. also read that overclocng can only safely give another 8% to 10% and that heat is the danger above that. I would like to replace the processor and then if needed overclock that so it is much much faster. I need to clear 1.3Ghz for video and am at 650Mhz

What Ghz Processor are you referring to that you overclocked? This s only 650Mhz not like 1.7Ghz or 2.0Ghz you now. This is 1/4 of todays processor speeds.

  • aercoach Jan 25, 2009

Processor charts have show a PII s FSB66 or FSB100 only. If it was 133 then it was a PIII. Back then all these complex pop ups and sites didn't exist like they do today either. I can try overclocking first. Do you know what max percentage of overclock should be used so as to not cook the Processor from overheating it. Do I have to match stepping and multiplier with my processor if I put in a faster one. I have a 650Mhz with a 6.5x multiplier and cBO or cCO stepping. I see that the 866 matches that. If stepping is the only thing that matters I have a match with a 1Ghz processor. Does anyone know what has to match ?, multiplier/stepping/FSB

These are all great for me to know and very good for understanding pc's better. The hardware though, what iis needed to put a bigger processor in this laptop. I currently have to change my keyboard due to a diagonal row of keys requiring extreme pressure to recognize that they are being pushed. I will have the man case apart, and what better time to put in a max processor for the board. I am at only 1 Gig left on my hard drive so I need to buy a new one cause I am to almost no room loeft for add ons. Might as well do that at the same time too. I have a plethura of used pc processors in PIII and want to put a bgger engne n ths laptop can t be done.

Thanks for the suggestions. When I loaded XP it did force NTFS system and would not allow FAT32 which I tried first. It sounds like I need to offload my drive completely to an external drive and wipe the whole 13Gb hard drive and start over again with a fresh reload of XP. My OS disk is only SP1 and I have internet updated it twice to SP2 and then SP3. I have a load stuck on the drive in FAT32 that I have to wipe the drive to get rid of, it error codes only and would not run in FAT32. Summerize: So I have to get the fastest PIII motherboard that fits this case and match the board with the processor designed for that board and cant install a higher PIII in this 650Mhz motherboard that I have right now then; right.

You obviously seem to have the adequate knolledge so why dont you overclock it...
overclocking used to be a touchy subject but know its undrstood that that it creates no problems..the chips are designed to be overclocked,in fact overclocked should now not be the trerminology for it ...it was called overclocking cos then it wasnt natural and created unstable systems ..now it is merely enhancing .

I clocked one of my pc's a long long time ago.it was one of the old cpu ,you know the ones where you flip an arm to release them...

well that particular pc played games like lightening executed programs in a flash downloaded and installed stuff at super speed and changed internet pages in about 1 second.

this by standard is faster than todays hi tec models.

Im running a top pc with latest processor and peak ram and I can at best load my net pages at around 2 seconds and that depends on whether the atmospherics are right.

I dont even think it was that size ..it was many years ago (amd)

the cpu was a amd megatrends bigger than the size of a box of matches .pentium 2 had just released their new chip( i think 133 mhz)I am talking 10 - 15 yr ago about.

    it was a 66....

if its speed youre requiring there are much better methods of improvement.

if you install ie 8 it first of all checks sys for any bugs/virus then optimises settings and thats before it even installed..norton 360 does this but its supposed to.

so thats ur net setup.you can then use a program to optimise pc...I have a few programs to do this,ie included...you can also change manually which uses less resources and there for quicker.in the registry....I use xppro sp3 with ie 8 and norton 360 on all my machines (4 laptops 1 tower)

I use download excellerator and a program called pc booster...

granted this pc is new , I use this for convenience (only 8 inch and light)but the others are no where near new but just as fast.

the trick is to have bios set to what you want it to do,have the registry optimised/cleaned ...alter the cache to compute quicker...

and have virtual ram set to at least twice the physical ram...then you might want to perform 1 or 2 tweaks like alter value for start programs and reset values.apart from starting up and loading windows if have to wait more than 5 seconds for anything,ANYTHING then I get pretty irate..my menus start instantly if I plug in ext wifi it has loaded and found network less than 2 sec.from clicking on ie icon to loading pages takes less than 3 secs and I load 2 pages at once.I have an iso of xppro with sp3 built in and cd key built in and pre registered which I wrote to cd yesterday in 6 minutes using nero 8 beta(its harder to to understand than the previous ones but does loads more)

I also use altiris recovery on all machines so if have any problems (though I usually dont) I can press f11 at boot and recover entire system in minutes to its previous config.

if you want any of these programs mentioned I can get links for u unless program is small enough to send via attachment then I can send straight away.

to put a better chip in(cpu)proccessor) you need to change the motherboard...

if you have all these proccessors which probably all work..I would experiment with them...pii chips were designed to run at different speeds dependant of machine;so with piii the technology is already there ,all your stepping ,the lot. all thats needed is time to experiment....change speed values/frequency,latency,volt input etc...

[ for any one else reading this dont go try changing voltage ..Im talking milliamps which a 1000 of them is less than a dead 1.5 battery.]

dont know what format ur using nts/,fat32...

I know xp has a nasty habit of using nts a default and sometimes not even giving you an option...but with fat32 you can do so much more like compress ur hd for a start ; and if you get the right software you can compress it further.nts is the more stable format but if you compress ur drive(fat32) so compact it will run at unbeleivable speeds.and save space.

why does your pc run fast when its just been reinstalled ?because it has no faults?becuase it has all the relevant drivers?theres no clutter?no..because it is using less space and can navigate quicker......you can have all the clutter you want ; if its nice and compact and filed away in its relevant sector youre talking speed.

you zip ur files in nts but hardly worth it ...only gain about 5meg in each 100.fat32 you can compress ur entire drive to a third of size standard.

so do get an option to install fat32 many xp disk dont give you this option.

if you do have this option try spotmau to pre format hd or paragon hdd recover to check repair bad sectors and format hd.

then when you boot xp and sys asks where do you want to install choose c: and choose dont change and you should be able to install xp in fat32( hd will already formatted in fat32)

I have a problem with dell latitude cpx h 500 when I want to get into the bios gets blocked

I would recommend connecting an external keyboard to the laptop and seeing if you can access the BIOS pages. It seems the keys are preventing you from doing so. The keyboard could be damaged.

The CMOS battery is on the motherboard of the laptop. If you can access it w/o damaging anything, you could reset the CMOS settings (clearing CMOS) and the password will no longer be valid. Hope this helps.

My dell latitude cpx j650gt does not have recovery partition working and I neeed to restore it to factory settings. I do not have original OS discs as I bought it used.

You do know only certain models have an os image on their harddrive and it is this that is enabled with F9 whilst booting (or other key)Failing this you will just have to install from external Dvd/Cd rom etc-this is the fact.

The computer BIOS is in english.
The operating system you have installed might not be a english one.
You need to reformat your computer using a english

Processor id recognized as 498mhz instead of previous 648Mhz

THE CPU IS TEST IN BATCHS OF 1000'S THEY WILL MAYBE PICK ONE OUT OF THE THOUSAND AND TEST LOOK A THE MAXIMUIM THE CPU FUNCATION AT THAN PICK A SAFE ALTERNATE SETTING OF MHZ FOR ALL CPU IN THAT GROUP, THAT ONE CPU MAY BE ONLY DEFAULTY CPU TO RUN AT 500 MHZ, THAT ONE HAS A PROBLEM IN THE CURCUITRY OF THE CPU, I WOULD RETURN IT TO WHERE YOU PURCHASED THE CPU AND EXPLAIN THE PROBLEM, INTEL ALSO IN THE CPU SPECIFACATION GIVE A TOLERANCE OF MAYBE 8-10%
ERROR ON ISSUES WITH THE OPERATION SPEED OF THE CPU, LETS SAY THE CPU IS RARED AT 500MHZ AT 1 % OPERATION SPEED IS WILL FAILURE OF 5MHZ, THAT CHIP IS STILL OKAY AND YOU JUST GOT THE RUNT OF THE LITTER.
NOW LETS SAY ITS RATE FOR 550 TO 600 MHZ THAN YOU HAVE A GOOD CASE ON RETURN BECAUSE THE FAULURE RATE IS TO HIGH ON THE % OF FAULTY REQIUREMENT,

I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND BASICLY HOW IT WORKS OR ASK SOME ONE AT INTEL TO EXPLAIN HOW THE FAILURE RARE ON CPU WORK.

PS

THAT PRODUCT IS NOT WORKING RIGHT, HAVE THEM RUN THE TECHNICAIN TEST PROGRAM, OR CPU TEST RATE IS, OR DRIVE PRO, OR CHECKIT SOFTWARE, OR WICHECKIT, OR DIAGNOSTIC UTILITIES SOFTWARE, QAPLUSWIN, OR THE TROUBLESHOOTER PROGRAM ON THE MACHINE.

Need faster PIII mobile processor for CPx 650 laptop = X ghz proc

I'm not sure about the CPU upgrade--these generally are hard to determine and this is complicated by the fact that Pentium III processors are no longer made, I would say that you could go on e-Bay and find one there (should be cheap) and try it.
An easier way to get a little more speed is to bring the memory up to the maximum the laptop will hold. (In your case 512 MB). That and set the paging file to allow the system to determine the size needed (Unless your system has Linux installed). Any further upgrades on an older system like yours are usually just a waste of money.

External Toshiba 400GB HDD not recognized on my Dell CPx J650GT

New hard drives need to be formatted! So go into the control panel switch to classic view, ( if you are still using category view for the control panel ) open administrative tools, then open computer management. Next open disk management. In disk management your new drive will show as raw, you will be give the option of formatting the drive, select primary partition and format in NTFS.
This will then format the drive, when this has finished your new drive will appear in my computer.
