Charging the battery in Nuvi 760

First time user. When it came on it said battery low. Don't have AC charger. My question is: If car is running, shouldn't it automatically charge the battery? Is there something wrong with it? Afraid to charge it through the computer, for fear there is. Can you help?

Thanks for the reply. If I charge through the computer, how long will it take to be fully charged? Thanks, Sandra

Make sure that you move the on/off switch mometarily to the left and hold it until it says charging and the screen goes black. It will take longer using the PC. I would let it charge overnight. When you press the black screen, it will either say "charging complete" or that it's still charging. Too bad garmin no longer provides an AC adapter/charger. :(

Yes, if there is +12VDC power at your car adapter and if the adapter is plugged into your Nuvi, it should charge. However, if your cigarette lighter is turned off with your ignition (like with some Honda vehicles), your unit will not charge.

1) Check the cigarette lighter is working by plugging in the lighter unit and see if it gets hot. If it doesn't then it is possible the fuse has blown.

2) You can plug the unit into a PC using the USB cable and if there is a fault you will get a message on the screen about 'USB over-current' but it shouldn't damage the computer.

If it runs/charges using the PC and (1) is OK then you may have a problem with the cigarette lighter - cradle cable or a problem with the cradle itself.

Nuvi 750 wont turn on even when i hold the on button for a minute or more

Looks like the in-built rechargable battery is fully discharged. Try charging it for good amount of time like more than an hour through Car or computer charger. Keep the unit off to maximize charging.

I have a Garmin 760 did not come with a ac

The AC charger plugs into the mini-USB port on the bottom of the unit. The term AC is somewhat misleading as the AC charger plugs into an AC outlet but provides +5VDC to charge the units internal 3.7VDC battery.

You can purchase an OEM AC charger here:

Where do i plug in the 120 charger on my garmin nuvi 760

I forgot to mention I have the Auto charger, a picture is found here.

If you bought a generic AC charger that claims to work for the 760 which doesn't have the mini-b end, you bought the wrong one.!
That (mini USB) USB port is the only place to charge the battery on this model

My garmin 750 gps will not turn on when plugged into power source

A dead battery will cause the unit not to turn on, but it should turn on if connected to an external power source like an AC wall charger or DC car charger.

No battery status Garmin 760

Went to Best Buy and they didn't know how to get the bar up either but said that the unit should be charged in 3 to 4 hours. So, when i unplugged the unit from the wall...the battery status showed up. I guess it doesn't show when the unit is plugged into the AC charger. Now, all is well.

Cannot turn on

It could be. Most GPS's will not turn on if the battery power is too low (very flat battery). If you think it isthat try charging it via car or the mains power charger for a while (at least an hour). The charging light will not come on at first, then eventually light up to say it is charging.

Sounds like you both have a battery problem. I experienced a similar problem when trying to charge via the USB-cable connected to my computer.
Ended up buying an original charger (expensive) and the charging went smooth.
The car charger should in any case work fine, so probably your battery is not very healthy.

Try holding your finger on the battery symbol for about 10 sec. The unit will then switch to a technical page. There you can observe the battery and charging voltage. When I plug in my computer USB-cable, I read around 4,4V and that is not sufficient for charging my battery.
When connected to the original charger, this voltage rises to about 5V which gives a nice charge. When unplugging charger, the unit displays the battery capacity. If the charging voltage is OK, but battery capacity drops quickly after you unplug charger cable, the battery is probably bad. (Of course you have to charge is for some time) I think around 4V battery voltage give 100% capacity. 3,9V gives about 90% capacity.
This will not solve your problem, but can give you an idea about what is wrong.
Good luck.

Nuvi 200 GPS

We did not have a charger to plug in the GPS to charge, so my husband plugged it into a battery charger. I guess the battery charger was low, so it drained the unit rather than charging it. It was so low it would not come on again. I have an electric charger that adapts the car charger into AC current, so I tried that and the unit came on. Problem solved and the GPS is working again. Thanks for responding.
