Question about Western Digital (WDXB1600JBRNN) 160 GB Hard Drive
When I turn on the hard drive it makes a very high pitch squeal sound that increases and then decreases in intensity. The light is on, but the computer with Windows7 Premium Home OS does not see it, it is not listed as a drive. After a while a dialogue box pops up and says the hard drive need to be formatted, yes or no. I've unplugged the power and rebooted it several times, changed the USB cable and port, no luck so far.

a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Hi, A couple of ideas: 1. There are 3 versions of this motherboard: Dragon Plus, V1.0 & V2.0, perhaps your BIOS needs an update to be able to recognize the new HD. This of course would require flashing; 2. There are two variations of a WD SATA hard drive: Serial ATA amd Serial ATA II; 3. Re Jumper settings: the eight-pin jumper block is only used to enable power management on the drive. There are no master/slave settings since there is only one drive per cable; 4. If you are fresh installing Windows on it, you need to press F6 when asked by the Windows Installer and follow on-screen instructions. Hope this be of some help/idea. Post back how things turn up or should you need further information.

hey im the same person who just posted above. i went to WD's website, and it said unplug the hard drive from the computer, and unplug it from the power source. then plug it into the power outlet, wait for it to spin up, then plug it in via USB/Firewire, whatever. it worked for me, so hopefully it will work for you.

SOURCE: hard drive not being recognized
my book world is a network drive, you should connect it to a router / switch using an ethernet cable. if you use a usb cable to get it recognized on your computer it will never work

Well i got a simple 320 gb external hard drive, and since the first month i had problems, i solve the recovery issue by opening the hard drive, and find it out, the inside was broken, and it got unplugged. so plugged it back and got my info. if your data its more important than 200dlls or less break the thing open, because if you claim the warranty they are not responsible for your information.

open up the case and pull the driver out. put the jumper to SL (slave) and plug it directly into *********** boards ribon cable after your windows drive (XP), if it does not recognize it try moving the jumper to the CL (cable select) see then, remember to turn off your computer before doing this each time. if either computer still does not see the drive the drive is probably bad. they dont last a long time if you leave it turned on and running all the time. they tend to get hot and burn out. if the drive it self is SATA you will need an adaptor, if its IDE (wide ribbon cable) it should plug in and be seen. hope this helps.

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions, DE,SATA
the leads from your ((motherboard to your hard drive)) make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them they might be faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they could be faulty a computer needs all electrical power and data to travel through every working device its and have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error
make sure your ram and cmos battery are securely seated with no dust in sockets
hope this will help
