A stiff handwheel can be a simple as a thread stuck in the raceway or as severe as a failed uppershaft bushing.
Using your instruction manual, perform the basic maintenance and see if that helps. If not, take it to a repair person for evaluation.

Hi, to remove the handwheel on a Viking 6440 you just need to take two screw drivers, one on each side, and gently pry the handwheel off. Nothing else is keeping it attached. Many of these are just stuck a bit and need gentle prying.
