You should not be having any problems with connecting the supply. The large main power connector is keyed so it can only fit into the mainboard connector one way (unless you really work to force it in backwards). The remaining 4-pin connectors are for drives. Is there some specific trouble you are having?

PCs these days are built so that cables only fit one way in one place where it should be. Just take your time, and don't force, but do apply pressure while inserting the cables into the correct slots.

The power supply should be a standard unit. There is the odd one that has special connectors or mount holes but those aren't as common as they used to be. You should be able to get any 300 watt or larger ATX power supply and drop it in. All you need to do is make sure you get the same watt rating or larger. So you could go with a 350, 500 etc. The larger the power supply rating the more connectors it will have.As long as you have the right connectors for the motherboard cpu and then enough for all of your drives and video card or other devices then you are good to go.

The best thing you can do is take the old one out and take it with you. That way you or someone at the store can check that you have the right new power supply.

TOWER WOT START UP

First to be check is your power supply. Used power supply or brand new ones, does not matter as long as it is working properly, with correct voltage and ampere rating. Check your power supply with a voltmeter. Please take note also the total watts you need.. If your power supply is running good, problems will go down the line, the Motherboard. Remove all devices (hard disk, cards, memory, etc) just the motherboard, just to see if the motherboard is working right. Your should be hearing a beep sound indicating that the board is alive. If yes, you may reinstall the rest of the devices you removed.

No you don't. If you think the power supply is bad, then unplug it, unscrew it, and take it to a discount place like Fry's to simply match it. Compaq does not make its own power supplies, so they use generic ones, like everyone else does. The only thing you have to choose is how many watts you need. The original may have been rated too small if it went bad, and you many want one with more power, like 500 watts.

Use a jumper lead and shirt the green (power good) signal to a black wire (gnd) they are conveniently side by side. This will work on all power supplies regardless of wattage.

Most power supplies are a standard size, but I'm not sure about your model of HP. The from the photos on the HP site, it looks like a standard mid-tower case and it should fit.
