We have an older dryer (ultimate care - super plus capacity) 12+ years old. It no longer "heats". Drum is still turning. I am assuming it is a thermostat - how much do those cost to repair?...

When it doesn't heat it could range from the timer to the heat element to the thermostat or even the motor so it could be as little as $125-350 to repair.

Whirlpool ultimate care ii dryer, only works when continuosly pressed the start button. What can be the problem. whirlpool ultimate care ii dryer model gew9878lw0

More likely than not either the start/run switch on your motor wen't bad, or the motor windings itself. Either way you need to replace the motor #279827 around $100 on up.
Not tough to get to if you know how to gain access to the cabinet, just remember that the blower wheel and motor threads going into the blower wheel are LEFT hand thread,
have fun, and best of luck,

How do you get to the motor of the dryer looks like all one bug piece of metal wrapped around the drum

Disconnect Power. Lift Cover on lint filter. Remove two Phillips screws taking care NOT to allow them to fall into the blower housing. Place putty knife in the seam between the top and front panel about 2” in from either side. Push in on clip while pulling control panel forward and tilting putty knife handle up, all at the same time. Same on opposite side. Raise top all the way.

Looking down inside dryer on left and right see a 5/16” hex head screw about 6 inches down. Remove each side while holding front panel in place. Pull top of front panel about 3 inches forward from sides and then pull up. This will disengage the front panel from lower pressure clips and allow you to turn it sideways and expose the dryer interior. Reverse process to re-assemble. Take careful note of belt configuration BEFORE removing it. Draw a diagram of its travel.

Motor and idler pulley for dyer will be on right. If you decide to change your own motor remember to write down what color wires go to what # terminals before removing any wires from the motor. This style of dryer has a fan blower threaded onto one end of the motor shafts, the fan blower is a left hand thread. See this picture link for how to get the fan blower off of the motor shaft. Angle the motor exactly as you found it. Rotating it may cause it to scrape against the drum.

Reverse Process for reassembly.

Whirlpool Ultimate Care II - Gas Dryer - Drum Won't Spin

If you are handy with tools, try to remove the back panel and feel the belt that should surround the drum. If access is that limited, try to turn the dryer on its side and you can get to the motor from the bottom. But like the guy said before, call a pro if you can't do any of this.

How do I access the drum of a Whirlpool Ultimate Care II gas dryer?

I had to remove two screws from the brackets on the back of the dryer, and the two screws from the dryers screen. Then I pushed the pins under the top portion of the dryer with a standard screwdriver, as I pulled up on it. I was then able to access the drum area.
