My unit is 9 years old. The same thing happened to me last night. I had been vacuuming the kitchen linoleum floor for about 10-20 minutes, I used the main vacuum for 4 throw rugs on the linoleum floor, then on the actual linoleum. I then used the brush tool around the edge of all of the counters. Then I used the wand tool last, and as I was almost finished, I backed the unit toward the last corner and ran over the cord, but it did not tangle. It just stopped like it blew a fuse, or pulled the cord from the outlet. I checked the outlet and the power cord connection to the vacuum, both seemed OK. I thought I might have blown a circuit breaker. Before I went to the circuit box in basement, I plugged the vacuum into a different outlet in living room, still no power. I took off the handle to see if I could check the power cord connection, which I couldn't. I found an on off switch inside that the handle activates, but it did not turn the vacuum on.

I figured it was broke so this morning I looked up, and called All Type Vacuum, hoping I might get it checked today. I thought it might have a fuse that blew. She said no fuse, I could bring it in and the main office that was closed Sat-Sun, would pick it up Monday. They retail shop was 7 miles from my house, but the main office that did the actual repairs is only 4 miles away, and they are only open Mon-Fri. So I figured it was easier for me to take it there on Monday.

Since I need to vacuum for a party Sunday, I was going to look in the basement for the older Hoover to see if I could use it this weekend. Before I went to the basement to find the older Hoover, I decided to check the cord, to see if it was damaged. All I did was run my hand down the entire cord from the vacuum to the plug, checking for a break somewhere in the cord. I did not find anything. I plugged it into the same plug I had used last night about 10 hours ago. The unit turned on and is working at the moment.

Possibly there is a thermal fuse in the motor that shuts down if it overheats and in the 10 hours it cooled and now works.

The crazy thing is this same vacuum a year ago, that I keep in a broom closet, had something heavy sitting partially on the vacuum, and when I pulled it out it sounded like something broke. The vacuum worked except the foot switch that releases the vacuum from the locked upright position, that also has to be pushed to lower the unit flat for going under furniture, seemed to be broken. I could not get it to stay locked in the upright storage position. I tried playing with it, but figured a small plastic piece broke that kept it from working properly. I might have used it a couple of times after that, and then suddenly within a month, it started working again, and has not been a problem for months.

I can not explain what happened, it is almost like my Hoover is self-healing.

I hope you have the same luck. It just seemed strange, when I went on the internet to see the current prices for the different Hoover vacuums, I could not remember the model number of the unit All Type offered to sell me, so I put in my U6311930 and found this site with repair problems, and saw your dilemma, that was identical to mine probably at the same time.

How do I replace a severed power cord on hoover windtunnel upright bagless model U5280900?

It would be the easiest way, attaching a male plug to the end of the severed cord so it can be used with an extension from the power outlet. Safe too if you duplicate the wires in the old portion, as the cleaner may or may not be earthed.

I was vacuuming with my Hoover Windtunnel Rewind t-series, and the vacuum simply stopped working. I plugged it into other outlets all around the house but no power suddenly.

Wait 30 minutes and try again, there is a thermal overload switch that resets itself.
Clean all three filters and see what happens.

Hoover Mach 5 turns off after 5 minutes of using. Can you advise the problem?

5 minutes everytime? If so, raise brush all the way, and vacuum next to nothing. in fact, tilt vac up so the brush touches nothing. wait 5 minutes. If it doesn't shut off, your brush is set too high. if it does, the motor is over heating. make sure bag is empty, no debris in brush, filters clean and make sure you're not plugged into an outlet that a breaker on the outlet can pop too.

Hoover Steam Cleaner F6024-900 does not turn on when plugged in to working outlet.

You may have something simple like a bad plug end piece on the power cord. try it in another socket if it still doesnt work you may have to replace the plug.
The most stressed point on a vacume is on the power plug and cord because it gets pulled and twisted a lot.

My vacuum died. It won't turn on. It is not the outlet. Is it a blown fuse? How do I replace the fuse? Where does it go? This vacuum is a little over 2 years old. My older Hoover WindTunnel STILL works and...

It's probably the power switch. My switch was dicey for a couple years, finally gave out. Easy to replace.

Remove the two screws just above the WARNING on the rear of the upper handle assembly, then slide the whole assembly to the rear of the vacuum.

Remove the dust bag cover. You will see two holes just above the upper corners of the dust bag. Remove the screws from these recessed screw holes.

Open the furniture cleaner cover and remove the cleaner attachment. Remove the single screw that was hidden behind the attachment. Then remove the attachment housing by pulling it towards the front of the vacuum.

Inside you will see the rear of the power switch. Pull off the power wires (don't worry, easy on/off male/female connectors, no soldering).

The switch is held in by tension bars at the upper and lower rear of the switch. Firmly press down on one of both of the upper/lower tension bars, and push the switch through the housing from the rear of the switch.

Replacement part number is 28161067, about $2.50. Shop will charge about $85 to repair it themselves.

After I run my vacuum for a couple of minutes it shuts off. If I unplug the vacuum and plug it into a different outlet most of the time it will start working again.

I would say check inside the plug and make sure the connections are tight. If the vacume runs fine on the other socket outlet then it will bw a faulty socket which cuts your hoover out. Can buy a new socket frount from diy stores for about 2-3 pounds. If the hoover also cuts out on the other sochet it will be a temperature cut out device on your hoover. If this is the case empty the bag and give it a good clean and get rid of any accumalation of dust/dirt

My hoover power drive vacuum simply died. It just shut off. I checked the plug, etc...I just can't get any power...Can you help?

If no light or motor sound cord is probably bad. Look near AC plug or just replace the plug end. Check with ohmmeter for continuity with switch ON.

Our Hoover U5780-900 stopped working while using the attachment. We let it cool down for about 5 minutes and it fired back up. It appears to shut down when it overheats.

Hoover only two years old and it stopped working!
Posted by baby_nurse on May 02, 2008
My Hoover self propelled wind tunnel was working great until a couple of days ago when it started shutting on and off while vacuuming. I thought it was the outlet but when I plugged it into two different outlets it did the same thing. Then finally yesterday it just stopped working it won't even turn on when plugged in. I thought it was the switch but it is not. Is it the motor? Has the motor burned out? Do I need to buy a new one? Help!!

Hello,
I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure.

I think you are right, if it is not the switch then it would be the motor. Does it smell bad like a burning smell? If so it is definitely the motor and then @ that point you may want to get an estimate for motor replacement, and keep in mind of what you spent on the vacuum versus what the cost of repair might be. My own rule of thumb is if it cost more than ½ of the price I paid for it then you have to decide – do I want to pay the repaired cost for the vacuum or do I want to purchase a new one. Just a suggestion... You may want to check with your local vac dealer. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.
