Well you may want to have a tech come out and check the freon level, but mostly when going into defrost, some units make alot of noise, the freon is reversed in the unit by way of the reversing valve, it makes a whooshing sound like freon is draining off, as far as the knocking noise, could be as I said in the beginning, might be low on freon, but it could be that, this particular unit does this, I have had units make some really strange noises in the past but functioned perfectly, hope this helped, please let us know, thanks again,

3 ton heat pump with piston in air handler. After unit shuts down it makes loud fluid flow noise for about 2 minutes

adding a tvx will not help. the sound you here is the pressure equalizing and that has got to happen for the compressor to start again the next time. A tvx will give you a higher efficiency because it can adjust to changing temperature conditions. Only way i know to quiet the noise is to try to insulate the lines better.

I'm using a calculation of VxA=W. Assuming your system is 240 volts and total amperage of system with 15 amps, I come up with 3600 watts or 3.2KW. Because the outdoor temp was above 35 deg F, the electric heaters probably did not cyle on to frequently if at all. Your calculation sounds reasonable to me. To determine exactly how many KW your system is using, you will need to determine exactly how many volts and amps your unit is running at...both indoor and outdoor units if this is a split system.
I've included a link to a website that helps the homeowner to determine the KWh.

I hope you found this helpful and good luck in your endeavor! :-)

Is there a system mismatch with an American Standard 13 seer 3 ton compressor and a Nordyne 3.5 ton air handler? Noise at TRV when heating.

This must be a heat pump? Sometimes the unit can be more efficient with this combonation. What you are probably hearing is the reverse direction of the
refrigerant going back through the liquid line.

If in cooling sometimes you can hear a gurgling sound going through the expansion valve, sometimes
this is a sign of low refrigerant or the system is fine..

If you recently had the outdoor unit replaced and noise is an issue, check to see if the unit has isolation pads installed underneath the unit whether
it be on concrete slab or on brackets mounted to
house. Sometimes the new units come with compressor that has a jacket installed over it

New Ruud 16 seer central air and heat pump - very noisy

A few things to check
1) Is the unit mounted on metal brackets attatched to
the house, is so I would probably put rubber pads
between the unit and the brackets to absorb the
vibration.

2) Same is tru if sitting on a concrete or plastic pad.
3) Some units come with the compressor that has
an insulated jacket around it, this is also for noise
reduction.

4) The fact that you replaced an older unit with a newer one could also mean that you have a bigger blower.

5) Which leads to the unit not performing because
it may have not been set up properly.

6) Take the door off the unit, make sure power is turned off. Usually on the left hand side of the indoor
unit it will list the temperature rise that this unit
requires. I`m guessing between 25-45 deg.

7) This is the temp. difference you would measure
on the return air near the furnace. Then Take a
temp. measurement in the Supply duct near the
indoor unit.

8) If its not within the range the furnace requires,
he needs to come back and adjust the fan speed

Depending on make and model sounds like a check valve clicking. It can sound like it is coming from that area. You say your unit is 16 years old. Honeywell did servey on unit 10 years and older and found out they loose 25% effeicency after 10 years. You may think about changing it out. With the new tax credits you can get a 16 seer unit for the price of a 13 seer. I went from a 10 to 15 seer and my power bill dropped 40%. Rus.

it is most likely due to a scroll compressor. these are very noisy and hard to get used to. if it does not have a compressor jacket it would be worth installing. a hvac company would have to get it for you and it put it on. labor should be minimal since it just slips around compressor. most likely $100 to $200.

Loud noise

It is probably a rotary compressor unit.
They tend to make a start up noise.
Some technicians advocate adding a booster starting device to help the compressor start more quickly, thereby reducing startup noise.

It sounds like your condenser fan motor may be locked up or the capacitor that helps give the condenser fan motor a kick to get it started may be defective. Try turning your system on and using a long screwdriver try to push the fan blade on the condenser fan motor to see if it will run normally if you give it the starting boost it needs. If it does run at full speed and doesn't over heat or start and then slow down then you probably only need to replace a simple 10-12$ capacitor. If it barely turns, makes an odd humming sound or overheats etc. then you will have to replace the condenser fan motor. This is assuming that the outdoor condenser has the 220v supplied and the 24v supplied to the compressor relay, that the compressor relay is engaged and suppling 220v to the condenser fan motor.
