Question about Philips DVDR3380/05 DVD Recorder

1 Answer

Unknown disk type

I have a Philips DVDR3380. It worked fine for a year but suddenly stopped working. When I put empty disk into the machine and try to record a program, the machine kept shown a message saying 'unknown disk type'. Can anyone help me to solve this problem? Or is this problem solvable? Thanks a lot for your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Press 'Disc Menu' and wait for 'no disc' to appear on the screen. Eject the tray by pressing the 'open / close' button on front of the recorder. Enter the following numbers very slowly on the remote control ' 0086000 ' Press ' OK ' button on your remote control. Close the tray by pressing ' open / close ' button on the front of the recorder. You can check this has worked by pressing ' 0009 OK ' on your remote after the tray has closed. A display will pop up on screen showing the Region as 0. This means you should be able to play discs from all Regions. If this doesn't work the first time! try again! Hope this helps!!

I purchased a Philips PET707 portable DVD player. It worked fine for a while, but now, when I put a disk into it, it just says

Replace the player, the laser pickup assembly is the problem, overtime it becomes weaker until it can no longer read the disk.

Unknown disc error and whirring sound!

Do you leave the unit on all day and night on standby?

If this unit gets to hot you can experience this problem I suggest that you turn the power OFF totally until the unit cools down and try again. Normally 15 mins is enough.

Sounds like the DVD writer is faulty. With it being an older model the cost of parts outweigh the value of the player.

You can buy a replacement DVDR3380 or DVD3480 cheaply at www.cheapestelectrical.co.uk

Not playing back on another machine

First of all, make sure you finalize the disc before playing on another machine.

If this is not the cause then the following should help:

There was a compatibility issue with this model. Philips released a software update for this model.

Follow this link:

http://www.p4c.philips.com/cgi-bin/dcbint/cpindex.pl?scy=GB&slg=ENG&cat=DVD_HOME_THEATER_CA&sct=DVD_HARDDISK_RECORDERS_SU&session=20080216151231_81.77.115.133&grp=HOME_ENTERTAINMENT_GR&ctn=DVDR3380/05&mid=Link_Software&hlt=Link_Software

Read and follow the instructions CAREFULLY.

Recorder will say "unknow disc type"

Take the disk out, power off, and on again. If it still says "unknown disc type" instead of "no disc," the internal disk drive is the problem. You can try to clean the sensor, but there is a good chance the drive needs to be replaced. I have a Philips DVDR3400 that did the same thing. I bought a regular computer internal drive, connected the power supply and IDE cable, and it now works.
