Question about Kenmore 24872 Top Load Washer
I have a Kenmore Top Load Washer model number 110.24872300 and last night it stopped agitating and wouldn't go into the spin cycle or drain. So reading these forums I found out about the coupler and took everything apart and the coupler is fine.
So I rigged the switch and hooked up the motor but didn't reconnect it to the gearbox and just started the spin cycle. The motor did spin but was making a loud humming/buzzing noise. Now it could be that the motor humming is normal and because of all the other racket the washer makes I never noticed it but this didn't sound like a correctly working motor. Does this sound like a "dead" motor and is there a better way to check it.
Motors hum, and your right, it could be no worse than normal.
I would be suspect that there is a gear stripped in the gearcase, since this is a direct drive washing machine.
Reassemble the motor back onto the washer. Run it through a cycle manually (rotate the timer by hand) until the motor turns, then look to see if it's turning. If it is, or even more so, if it pumps water out of the tub, then it is probably the stripped out gearcase.
Reply with you findings and more advice.

Remove the 2 end caps on the control console.
They snap off.
Remove the 2 screws on the right and left front of the console.
Lift the control console to the rear of the machine. It is hinged.
Use a flat blade screwdriver to unhook the 2 brass clamps holding the cabinet to the rear panel.
Unhook the lid switch wire harness.
Pull the cabinet forward to remove it from the base.
Reverse this procedure to re-install it.
