Turn off the power and look inside the machine to the right hand side. Just in front to f the print head you will see a white plastic dowel (see photo). Use something technical - like a finger, pen or screwdriver - to push this dowel in. You can then move the print head by hand to the middle of the carriage.
Once moved, turn the printer on and watch it travel back to the home position. If after returning home the dowel pops back out and does not retract itself, you will need to strip the machine out and rebuild the ASF section. Sounds hard but its just a few plastic parts to take apart and reassemble whilst looking to see if anything is broken.
Get a service manual; for the machine HERE if you need to strip it out.

Hi--I had a BIG problem, day after day, fiddling with my Epson Stylus printer. The "General Error" kept repeating, and the two red buttons flashing each time I turned the printer off and on. There was nothing jammed at all. So, as a last resort I took a paper towel and ran it along the bottom of the inside of the printer (yeah--all technical jargon, I know--not a computer person here :-) and a bunch of black ucky stuff came up. MY PRINTER WORKS NOW! Hope this helps someone else. I saw a lot of posts where people said to throw out the printer and start fresh when my problem happened, but what an easy fix. GOOD LUCK!

This is a general error and usually it means that something serious enough to stop the printhead, paper feed or similar has happened.
Most of the time it's related to the printhead so here's a few things to check:
Obviously that's a pretty long list of possible problems but hopefully it will at least narrow down what is going on in the printer so you can provide more information as to what it isn't or might be.
Hope that helps.
