HP dv1000 Laptop Locks Up

My old HP dv1000 Laptop has decided to start locking up for no apparent reason. The screen will freeze and laptop is not responsive mouse or keyboard input. The only option is to pull the plug and restart. I thought it might be heat related, but it sometimes happens right after boot up so the heat hasn't even built up to any level at that point. On occasion, it will do the same thing following any slight movement of the laptop. Bad connection somewhere in the motherboard maybe? Open to all suggestions/ideas.

Thanks,

Ron

Yes, I can power off with the power button.

    RE: TAT4U

I've just finished running defrag. I was setting up to do a full disk scan for bad sectors when it locked up again. I've rebooted following the lockup and it is once again locked up at the login screen.

I worked on this late last night and after several attempts, finally got a full scan with the XP built in disk scan. I also removed and reinstalled the HD just make sure the contacts were all seated properly. I removed both RAM modules and inserted them in opposite slots for the same reason. This seemed to do the trick as it ran ffor hours with no problems. However, I found that my AV client could not register it's upgrades and java would lockup when trying to upgrade. I uninstalled and reinstalled both to no avail.

Following that, I decided to reinstall XP using the repair option. It worked, but now the lockup problem has returned.

Overall, I'm not losing any sleep over this issue as this is only a backup laptop. When the problem first arose, I convinced my wife I needed a new replacement. Although I want to keep XP on it, I also want to use it to test Windows 7 Beta which I just downloaded.

FYI - mydrive.ch is a site with a free online storage capability for up to 1 GB of any kind of files. I use it all the time for various files.

    Thx,

    Ron

Thanks for the offer. That program might be just what I need. Also that recovery program would be great. My laptop is an HP doesn't have the usual recovery partition that Dell uses, so I can't restore to like new condition easily. It's always a problem doing a complete reinstall of the OS because you have to also find and reinstall all drivers and native programs like CD burners.

have you tried removing and replacing ram(mem)

this is worth a try which takes minutes..because I'm pretty certain its bad sectors and you'll have to repair the hd with separate software.

paragon hd recovery(repairs faulty hd,bad sectors, drives which wont format for any other software)

;...is the best program Ive used for this, and I've used many, spotmau is a great all rounder but I have had drives so damaged that even spotmau cant do but paragon has never failed me.one particular drive never leaves me ...I ended up wiping disk entirely fixed bad sectors and formatted with paragon and then when it came to installing os where it asks where to install and then formats I selected make no changes and install to existing drive and that did it (windows by default always executes a format before any install)if you cant find any programs that allows you to perform these duties I will see if I can find link for you...

I have all programs which I ever mention just that cant send cos attachment only allows 10mb and most zipped programs are a little bit more than 10 meg

your hd may still have bad sectors on ..you can intall os on drive with bad sectors ;but after a while these bad sectors become worse until os is unavailable and drive wont format using regular methods.your drive seems it may not have too many bad sectors but if want send me email and I'll give you a link for spotmau which will repair bad sectors and a whole lot more.you could search for a copy on net but it will be trial version so if you want to unlock the power of the software you have to buy it.my link is the full software which I'll also send the key...also I can send a recovery program for when you have pc running sweet.so as in future if any os probs you just press f11 at boot and it restore pc to previous state (before probs)in a matter of minutes

HP DV1000 won't run normal after a forced shutdown

For this kind of issue, please follow up the following steps to check:
1.confirm the battery and ac adapter connect the laptop normally.Maybe the bad connect lead to this problem. If there are no lights when you turn on laptop, one of possible reason is that your adapter is malfunction.

2.the second possible cause is laptop dc jack failure. If the dc jack is broken or loose, you are required to replace it or repair it.

3.Another possible reason is that there is something wrong with laptop motherboard. For this situation, it includs two kinds of possibility,a failure in an electronic circuit and BGA malfunction.

For more detailed reasons and solutions, please have a look at the following article:

If you verify your laptop adapter is dead and you plan to order a new one, I recommend one for you on the basis of your laptop model:

Hey Gigantegenov!

Seems like the program that controls your special keys (volume control) causes your computer to freeze!

I would recommend reinstalling the drivers/application for it. Try this download and let me know what happened: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-31502-1&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&os=228&product=435618
