If the pins behind the printhead are clean and not worn through (by repeated cartridge movements when printing) and the printhead pins are clean and sprung, then the ink or printhead itself just could be the cause. However if a new cartridge and a new printhead don't fix it then I think you're out of easy options. If, as has been suggested, the ink's blocked in the printhead it's surprising that not even a little gets through because it's always reported as an all-or-nothing problem.
I'd think that the "thing" that selects the black cartridge has stopped working and that this "thing" is in the electronics in the heart of the machine.
This problem killed my two ESP 5250s and it happened immediately, with no transition between OK and not OK.

The larger of the two black cartridges is used for text only printing.

The saller cartridge is used for black in graphic images or pictures.

This saves you color ink . It allows you to put the black ink on the image without making the color inks blend the black ink.

The printer will print ok in color, but will not print black ink. No copy or printing.

My best guess without knowing more is that your printer has both a color print cartridge and a black ink print cartirdge. Replace the black ink cartridge and you should be fine. You might also find that replacing the entire printer is less expensive....All the best!

Black ink wont print, but color works fine

The black cartridge needs replacing it sounds like. On many printers, that is the only way that you get black.

Black and white not printing correctly, color is fine

If you are not using Epson ink, your printer will do this. Epson printers hate knock-off ink. Always use Epson ink if you want to keep your printer working properly. To solve the problem you are having, try cleaning the ink tubes. Make sure you re-install them properly. Hope this helps. Charlene

Want to print with black ink cartridge only

It is a little known fact that ink cartridges do have an expiry date, and it is sometimes possible that even if a printer reads full, that it has dried out and will not print. When you recieve a warning that your ink is too low you will simply be unable to print black ink after a certain point. Generaly if you want to print in only black you will have to do that when you print a document. For instance in IE when you go to file and then print you can select prefrences and select print in greyscale or black. hope this helps!
