Magnetic vent cover also has one popular feature. It can be painted or applied wallpaper over it and can even be covered with carpet to blend with the room and remain unnoticeable.

How do i get the air vent cover off, so I can clean grease from the top.

Good Afternoon Friend,

I understand you are trying to the air vent cover off your Frigidaire microwave, model# PLMV169DC, so you are able to clean the grease from underneath the top cover. Please follow these instructions:

1. Disconnect power to the microwave oven at the circuit breaker panel or by unplugging.
2. Remove the louver mounting screws.
3. Pull the louver away from the unit.
4. Change the charcoal filter.
5. Carefully push the louver back into place and replace the screws removed in step 2.

I ask that you please follow up with a comment on the post, at your convenience, to advise if further troubleshooting is needed or if your appliances status has changed successfully. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-
WP

How to change the inside bulb in a ge spacemaker microwave that has a top vent fan

My Spacesaver bulb replaces from the top. You have to remove 2 screws that hold the upper vent cover. W/ cover off you will find a phillips head screw about the center that holds the bulb cover. Remove the cover screw & lift up & remove the cover, then replace the bulb, the cover & screw then put the vent cover & it's 2 screws back. There may be some variance but they are all similar.

Emerson microwave mwg9115sl over heats then turns back on after 20 minutes

Your magnetron is overheating, which can be caused by:

  • operating oven without cover(s) in place
  • wrong magnetron installed in oven
  • an old or otherwise failing magnetron
  • cracked magnetron magnet
  • improper power line voltage (should be 110-125VAC)
  • foods low in moisture (popcorn & bacon, e.g. - add 1/2 cup of water in rear oven)
  • failed or inoperable cooling fan or hood vent exhaust fan
  • deteriorating foam weatherstripping seals in air ducts or on outside cover
  • blocked air vents (dust, animal nest debris, insufficient free air space behind & around oven, etc.)
  • clogged or greasy charcoal filter or grease filter
  • blocked duct in hood vent exhaust

The first suspects in my book are fan failure, blocked vents, or bad magnetron.

Microwave heats but makes smoke and smells like something burning inside. Help!

I would first be sure the inside is clean of grease and food debris. That's always critical.

Next I'd suggest removing and checking / cleaning the stirrer cover, stirrer, and the area under the cover and around the stirrer.

That's covered on page 33 of the service manual here.

That too should be clean.

If it still smokes, you may have a failing high voltage transformer.

You can order Maytag parts here.

WHEN IN USE IT MAKES A BUZZING SOUND FOR APPROX. 2-3 SEC. WE SEE A ROUND SPOT WHERE THE PAINT HAS BROWNED ON THE RIGHT WALL ON THE INSIDE OF THE MICROWAVE.

Hopefully this is just some grease on the waveguide cover / stirrer cover or the cavity wall.

If it's progressed to waveguide or magnetron damage, that gets expensive.

The first step is to inspect and clean these areas and replace the cover if it is damaged.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

If the cavity metal is chipped or discolored, the area will first have to be sanded smooth and cleaned and dried thoroughly.

Then you can apply some high-temperature appliance paint, available from places like Wal-Mart, Lowe's or Builder's Square.

If your waveguide cover / stirrer cover is burned, it will need to be replaced.

It provides critical protection for the magnetron.

Microwave work for 2 minut and turns off and after 5min its turns back on and do same thing

If it goes dead for a while during or after cooking then comes back on, the magnetron is probably overheating and causing the magnetron thermostat to open.

Then when it cools, it closes the circuit and allows power through again.

An overheating magnetron can be due to:
  • operating oven without cover(s) in place
  • wrong magnetron installed in oven
  • an old or otherwise failing magnetron
  • cracked magnetron magnet
  • improper power line voltage (US homes should be 110-125VAC)
  • foods low in moisture (popcorn & bacon, e.g. - add 1/2 cup of water in rear oven)
  • failed or inoperable cooling fan or hood vent exhaust fan
  • deteriorating foam weatherstripping seals in air ducts or on outside cover
  • blocked air vents (dust, animal nest debris, insufficient free air space behind & around oven, etc.)
  • clogged or greasy charcoal filter or grease filter
  • blocked duct in hood vent exhaust
I would suspect a failure or the fan, clogged filter or bad magnetron.

You didn't mention your brand or model number, so I'm limited to general advice.

We have a model # mmv1153bas over the range microwave. When heating or cooking items longer than a couple minutes the unit shuts off and remains off for at least 1 hour. It is not the breaker or the plug...

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are operating here.

It is vital that the cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed. Repeated shutdowns like this are endangering the magnetron, assuming it's not bad already.

Your owner's manual will cover checking the filters and will cover warranty terms. The magnetron may still be covered.

If for some reason you don't have your manual, you can download it here.

Light won't go on; Model MMV1153WB-O

You can download owner's manuals and installation instructions for several brands (including Amana, Frigidaire, Jenn-Air, Kitchenaid, Litton, Maytag, Roper, Tappan, Thermador and Whirlpool) here.

Enter it as MMV1153WB0 (no dash, zero on the end, not "oh")

Or just get it here, to be more exact.
On page 4, it says:

"Installing/Replacing Filters and Light Bulbs
■ Grease filter: Grease filter is on the underside of microwave
oven. Clean monthly. Slide the filter away from the tab area,
and drop out the filter. To reinstall, place end of the filter into
the opening opposite the tab area, swing up the other end,
and slide it toward the tab area.
■ Charcoal filter: The charcoal filter is behind the vent grille at the
top front of the microwave oven. The charcoal filter cannot be
cleaned, and should be replaced about every 6 months.
Remove 2 screws on the vent grille, tilt the grille forward, lift it
out, and remove filter. To reinstall, place the filter into its slotted
area – wire mesh side up, replace vent grille, and secure with
screws.
■ Cooktop light(s): The cooktop light bulb(s) is(are) located on
the underside of the microwave oven, and is(are) replaceable.
Remove bulb cover screw, and open the bulb cover. Replace
bulb, close bulb cover, and secure with screw.
■ Cavity light: The cavity light bulb is located behind the vent
grille at the top front of the microwave oven, under the bulb
cover, and is replaceable. Remove 2 screws on the vent grille,
tilt the grille forward, and lift it out. Open bulb cover and
replace bulb. Close bulb cover, replace vent grille, and secure
with screws."

HINT: Unplug the oven before removing or installing the bulbs, or you may need this service.

How does the vent work?

Under cabinet microwaves generally have two configurations for venting.
1) There is a vent cover plate on the top or rear (sometimes both) of the unit that can be removed and connected to a duct that vents up to the roof. If you do not have such a duct installed then that cover plate should be left on the unit so that it vents in configuration 2.
2) With the external venting ports sealed with the cover plate(s) the microwave simple draws air from the bottom (usually through 1 or 2 grease capture screens) and vents it out thought the front/top of the unit. This configuration isn't very useful as it just blows the air back into the kitchen. Many people don't both using the microwaves blower in this configuration.

Microwave problem

That panel is probably mics, not netla, though it may look like metal. The job of the waveguide cover is to protect the waveguide (opening) and the magnetron from buildup of food particles and grease. When the grease and food particles build up on and behind the cover, they will carbonize and arc - and maybe even flame up! The solution is to clean it and keep it clean - but if it's too dirty or is burned, it must be replaced. Sometimes it's necessary to remove the cover to clean both sides of it, and to clean the edges of the opening it covers. It is sometimes held in place with a small plastic rivet (or screw) and once that is removed, the cover will slide over a little then drop down. Be VERY careful not to get cut on the potentially sharp edges of the opening, and do not spray anything into the opening. Apply an alcohol-based cleaner (such as the purple kind) and /or gentle scouring powder to a cloth or paper towel and carefully wipe it out, then when it's dry, reinstall the cover and the rivet. I suggest to my customers that they NEVER use any ammonia-based cleaner (like the blue stuff) on a microwave, since the ammonia will crack and distort polycarbonate plastics.
