Re: dvd codecs

Does it have a DVD drive or is it only CD? If you are sure the drive is DVD- does it play a CD? If yes for Cd by no for DVD and you are sure it is a DVD drive then the DVD laser is shot -new drive.

I bought a DVD and does not work. I need a free codec for HP 550

First make sure that your new DVD Drive is functional and it can read data from the disks. You can play DVDs only if the DVD drive is working properly. However, Codec are required to play some file format. You can download the latest version of Media Player Classic (K-Lite Codec) FOR FREE
It will install all the required CODEC and you can play all audio - video files.

Hope it helps! Good Luck!

My Dell 1737 DVD/CD drive won't recognize DVDs or burn DVDs but will play select CDs fine. Solutions? Thanks, Jeff

Hi, pretty much the codec is not installed on the computer and I think that's the reason why the system can't read DVD. Try to download the right codec for your PC.

You could try VLC player. Here's the link:

Or you can also try installing a codec. Here's the link:

The common advice is to go to cyberlink, pay and then download windvd, however there is a better option.
Download VLC which is a tremendous video player (plays every video format) that will play DVDs. It's free too :-)

My a60 plays some dvds and not others - why?? I am not using rental copies!!!

are there any common characteristics of the dvds it won't play? Use this link to download and update your codecs.

Codec stands for encoder/decoder keys which basically instructs the computer and the media player how to properly record and playback media correctly.

Now that your codecs are updated, see if the problem continues. If the issue persists, (i am assuming you already checked the surface area of the dvds to see if they were dirty, scratched or damaged) then double check the specs on acer's website to see the compatibility limitations on the player. not all dvds are created equal my friend... newer video compressions, track layering, and hi-def technologys may be beyond the capabilities of your laptops current device. the good news is, upgrading the optical dvd drive to work with the latest innovations is not difficult and its not going to set you back.

let me know what happens - if i was able to fix-ya, let us know by submitting your feedack.

I installed XP Pro, and now I cannot use my DVD drive to play DVDs

Windows XP doesn't come with the proper codecs to play DVD movies by default. You either need to buy a program with the codecs, or pay Microsoft for them. What I've found works best is to download the trial of WinDVD. It installs the needed codecs and you don't even need to use the program. So after you install it just use whatever program you originally wanted to use and you should be set.

(The older versions od WinDVD could be uninstalled while leaving the codecs behind, but the new version seems to remove them after uninstalling, so you'll want to leave it on the computer)

Hope that helps :)
