We try to fax out ....it will take a couple of papers and then just stop. A report comes back as "poor line condition". We don't have the manual so I can't check to see what i can do to solve this problem.

Plug a regular telephone into your fax line....if you have noise and static instead of nice clean dial tone then report the problem to your phone provider.
Perhaps you indeed have lots of interferences on your telephone line, or the recipient does. It is also possible that the unit has been set for a different telephone line standard (for some other country) - check the manual for relevant settings. If you don't have a manual, go to Brother website and download one.
the problem is with their system, not yours. they are probably missing lots of faxes. They may for instance have a few phone lines which receive faxes called a "hunt". If one or more of their lines are bad they may not even realize it.
I suggest you call them and tell them what is going on.
The modem in the fax is having a problem with what is called 'handshaking', meaning its not able to sync up with each other. Try another outlet if one is available or even take it to another home or business to see. The cord from the wall to the fax could be bad also, try replacing that after you try it somewhere else.
