Laundry has a bad smell. What will happen if I use Bleach?

Towels and Sheets all smell musty, have tried white vinegar, non-chlorine bleach, baking powder and cleaned all the seals. Nothing seems to work. I am tempted to use bleach, but machine says not to. Any suggestions?

SOURCE: Bad Smell

Make a boil wash (with no clothes and detergents) put in the powder's drawer a cup of bicarbonate of soda. It should clean the machine and remove out the bad smell. Good luck!

SOURCE: Bosch 3.81 cu ft Nexxt 500 Plus bleach not dispensing

We had the same problem with the bleach dispenser. It was under warranty so Lowe's sent a repairman that replaced some part in the control panel that he said was faulty on this model. He also said to only use 1-2 Tablespoons of HE detergent and leave the door open. Also dilute any softeners before adding them.

SOURCE: Cleaning agent placement

From left to right as you see.
1 This is for your frontloader soap powder or other detergent.
2 Fabric conditioner or softener. If this is too thick, mix with water to prevent clogging.
3 Detergent for soaking agent. I dont see 'bleach' anywhere

There is an panel, front bottom right which holds your pump filter, unscrew to clean out. But wait. Plug off the mains.
You will see a hose on the left, this is if your water in the tub cannot drain, you can drain it here. Your tub can hold upto 20 litres/4.4 gals.so have a suitable container to collect; carefully remove cap to drain out. Reason why it doesn't drain is because there is a block in your pump (right side) which you must clear.
To keep your pump from probs (a tip which you seldom see) empty all pockets of clothes before putting into machine. I have a non electronic Philco which i dont remember cleaning with hotwash or anything, 10years +

For exteriors do not use solvents or steel wool. Only hot soapy water with a mild non-abrasive cleaning agent, dry with soft towel.

Above should be useful. Pl rate.............

I just viewed a bunch of complaints about chlorine bleach getting dumped on the subsequent load, but did not see a true root cause response. 1st question: When you use chlorine bleach with the whitest...

chlorine bleach is a highly corrosive addition to laundry that is not necessary... try Borax and Hot water. If the clothes sat in the Bleach for the entire wash cycle it would damage them and shorten the life of the clothing fibers considerably...

The washer has a musty/sour smell to it...any way to clean it?

There are several things you can do. First you might try filling with hot water and dissolving 1 cup of baking soda. Let it sit for about an hour. Then complete the cycle and when done, leave the top open so tub will dry completely.
Second, you might try the same thing but use 1 cup of chlorine bleach. Let it sit for about 30 minutes and then complete the cycle. Again, leave the top open so the tub will air dry.
Finally, you can fill with hot water and use 1 cup of white vinegar. Let it sit for an hour and then follow the same procedures above.
Once you've run the cycle, you can wipe down the interior edges and under surfaces with a rag that has been moistened with the solution of vinegar or chlorine.
The baking soda neutralizes odors. The chlorine bleach will kill mold and mildew spores. The vinegar is acidic and it too will prevent the mold and mildew from growing.
Once you've freshened the washer, remember to leave the top up after you've completed all the laundry so that there is air and light entering the tub. Mold and mildew do not live well in bright, airy environments. I hope this helps. If so, please come back and comment on my suggestions!

Its a stale, manky smell on all the clothes when they come out.

Hi, You did not mention front or top loading machine so I am going to assume you have a front loading machine.

Do this to clean your machine. Run a hot wash with 1/4 cup NON-bleach "powdered dishwashing soap" (Dawn or Cascade) and 1 cup of bleach. Then run a rinse with 2 cups vinegar and finally a regular wash with cleaning rags and HE type laundry soap. You may hae to do the dishwashing powder and 1 cup bleach wash 2 times to clear a bad case of mildew build up. You will not find this in any manufacturers user's manual but it will rid your machine of the nasty / musty smells.
If you are using regular laundry soap this problem will repeat often. If your using HE laundry soap you should do the above procedure about every 90 days.
We would appreciate hearing any success or failures related to your post by a future response from you as to how the solution above worked out.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

Clean clothes that smell bad

Peace,
ngafm at your service!
You may have a small amount of water or lint lift in the machine somewhere that is not completely dumping out !
This is sometimes common on front loaders! Or the pump is weak!
I tell my customers to try running the washer without clothes once a week with hot water and a 1/4 cup of bleach!
. BUT the first load you do after this must be white in case there is a drop of bleach left in the system, that it does not spot bleach a white spot on your colored clothes!

If not this does not remedy the situation you will need hands on service!

CLEANING OUT CAT DANDER ETC FROM WASHER

Quenie, vinegar will not harm your washer at all. Place it in the detergent side of your dispenser and run a Hot wash cycle. Don't mix chemicals, though... if you choose to clean your machine with bleach, for instance, don't use additional cleaners along with it. Vinegar only, bleach only... you get the point.

You may want to run a "water only" Hot wash cycle with bleach (no clothing/towels) after your Son has finished his laundry. This may help alleviate your allergy problem.

For regular maintenance on your washer, you ought to try something like this. It'll keep your washer smelling great.
