How to change the engine thermostat

5 cyclinder, Air, 4 WD am not leaking any fluid the engine light came on and the person at Auto Zone put the gizmo on it and said it could be theremostat or engine coolant low or bad sensor. The sensor in truck works find and I have added fluid just in case. Am waiting for computer recycle and see if that is problem I was wondering where and how bad is it to change theremostat. I think it is on the lower hose to the block Helpl would be appreciated. Thaks

Nope, that's not where it is; it's on top of the block where the thick radiator hose connects to it! That is the housing where the thermostat is inside. Drain the system. Pull off the radiator hose from the fitting and loosen the two bolts holding the housing. There you will see the thermostat looking at you (you may have to pry the top of the housing off, sometimes they are cemented in with a gasket). Reverse order after dropping in new stat!

I took my 2000 camry to auto zone the check engine light came on they said it showed the engine is too cool what does that mean?

From the limited information you gave it sounds like your thermostat is stuck open.
The thermostat is a temperature operated valve that stops the coolant from flowing through the radiator until the engine warms up. I simple test is to drive for 5 minutes and then check the heater output. The temperature of the air from the heat vents is related to the coolant temperature in the engine. If the air from the vents is only slightly warm with the heater set on HIGH then change your thermostat.
Changing the thermostat on a 4 cylinder Camry is a fairly basic DIY job. Your friends at Autozone can fix you up with the parts (don't forget the gasket). You'll need to (partially) drain the radiator in the process. Probably a good time to change it. You can buy pre-mixed or get a gallon of "pure" and a gallon of distilled water from the grocery store and mix your own.

2 problems, first of all it looks like my steering wheel fluid is leaking,my husband cannot find leak, 2nd my engine light went on, took it in to auto zone, they said my engine is getting air from a hose...

any rubber pipes on the inlet manifold ,they perish and it sucks in air ,fluid leak is on the pressure side of the pump normally but it could also be the steering rack with a internal leak ,Best advice is to ask a local mechanic to have a look ,a lot of these quick fit centres are absolutely useless because they do not employ qualified people because they would then have to pay tradesman wages instead of unskilled wages

Engine idles up and down radicaly when first cranked , check engine light is on auto-zone put their reader on truck and it pulled up code for mass air flow sensor, so i replaced it still no change.

your idle is compensating for poss air leak like vac or idle air motor, does it settle down as it warms up .if so then a poss coolant sensor is thinking that it is 50 below.hence a very rich mixture and a idle which will hunt.idle air motor maybe plugged with carbon.also disconect the battery for couple of mins.start and hold idle high about 2000 rpm for 5 mins if all above does not work.

I have a 2002 ford taurus. check engine light is on. Auto Zone did a scan today and the error code was p1507 can you please tell me what i need to do to fix this problem.

possible problems

Vaccuum leak
failed IAC valve
open or short
air inlet plugged

P1507 means "Idle Air Control Underspeed Error". It can be most commonly caused by a vacuum leak, a damaged Idle Air Control (IAC) assembly or a stuck IAC valve that needs cleaning. Essentially, your engine isn't idling at high enough according to your computer's programming parameters. Many times this shows up in colder weather as you try and start your vehicle. It will usually die unless you put your foot on the gas pedal and raise the RPM's. I have also read where a clogged air filter might be the problem. I would try cleaning your IAC valve first.

Check engine light on. took the car to auto zone to put it on a scanner. trouble code p0420. catalyst system efficiency below threshold. probable cause; large vaccum leak, fuel system fault, ignition...

Diagnostic code produces P0420 catalyst system efficiency below threshold-Bank 1. Probable causes are listed as follows:
1-air leak in exhaust before rear 02 sensor, 3-Fuel system fault,
4-faulty catalytic converter.

Power steering leak

I had that problem with my Tempo and it was the high pressure hose running behind the engine. My husband replaced it and that fixed the problem. We got the hose at Auto Zone for 32 bucks. If you change it out yourself make sure you take off the sensor that is on it so you can put it on the new hose. This hose is hard to replace yourself due to the tight space. Also you have to take off the driver side tire so you can get to the hose to take it off and also you have to unhook the other hose in front of it but just that part. You can leave the part that is below the air breather screwed on. If you don't turn the wheel sharply you will lose less fluid.

# 4 cyclinder

Number 4 cylinder is the 2nd cylinder back on the driver side. Check to see if your EGR valve is clogged with carbon. If it is, clean it out and I like to remove the EGR tube from the exhaust to valve and clean it out as well. The EGR tube is a metal tube. Remove the spark plug and see if it's been firing. How long has it been since it's had a set of plugs and wires?
