Most external webcams directly hook up to a computer via a USB cable connection. However, if this cable is damaged, it will prevent the video signal from reaching the computer, rendering the web camera useless. Depending on the severity of the damage, you may be unable to correct the USB cable, but there are a few methods of checking and fixing the webcam's USB cable.

Disconnect the USB cable from your computer and check the connection port on the cable. If the cable is dirty or dusty, you will need to clean it to improve the connection and signal transfer. Spray a few shots of compressed air into the interior of the metal connection port. This will remove dust and other debris that may be stuck inside. Connect the USB port into a different connection port. Some USB connections do not accept all USB equipment, so changing the connection of the USB cable may correct any connection issues you are having. Look over the cable itself. If there are any tears or slight cuts in the wire, wrap electrical tape around it. This will seal off the damaged area while preventing any of the video signal from escaping through the open "wound." Delete the driver, then reinstall the driver for the webcam. The current driver may be damaged, so reinstalling it will correct the problem. Click "Start," "Control Panel," "System," "Hardware" and "Device Manager." Scroll through the list of drivers installed until you find the webcam listing. Right-click it and choose "Delete." Restart the computer, then insert the driver installation CD (provided with the webcam) and follow the onscreen prompts to install the driver back onto the computer.
Hope this helps.

Trying to set up my vid cam as a webcam on my computer. I know I have to change the cam to USB connection which I do,but when I then go to fire up as a webcam instead of my MS webcam,the Panasonic cam...

You can try this: Disconnect the usb cable and set the USB function to PC Connect then reconnect the cable to the computer. If the problem persists, try rebooting the pc. If you're still having a problem, try using another USB port. Have you considered disconnecting the MS webcam when you try to use this camera? Admittedly, there shouldn't be a conflict, but I've had some strange problems with Microsoft peripherals, so nothing is too far-fetched. Good luck!

My webcam is not connected... how to connect my webcam.?

Thank you for contacting Fixya.

Things you need before connecting web camera;
• Webcam
• USB cord (usually mini)
• A PC(Personal Computer)
• Mouse
• Keyboard

Please follow the links below for connecting the web cam;
1. Make sure you have or buy a webcam.They are usually $20-$30.Make sure you have an open USB port on your PC.
2. Now Connect USB via Webcam.Then via PC.
3. Now you will then have a setup popup so if you have a popup block un block it now and restart your computer.
4. When computer it restarted you will do the setup. If the setup doesn't come up then check the connection and restart computer
5. Then when setup is completed then make sure your web cam is up on your computer very stedy.Then do a test before you do a conversation. This is usually to see if you would need any extra lighting or not.
6. Now enjoy webcam.I would recommend to keep your web cam connected so you wouldn't have to go though this again but if you cant then just reconnect and usually you would be ok.

Hope it works.

uninstall the driver the for the webcam, and if you still have the cd driver for it, then after you uninstall it, then run the cd driver and plug it back in. if it is still saying unable to connect, then you need to update your usb drivers via windows update.
