) there are two timings marks, one on the crankshaft, the second is on the camshaft pulley, it's the rectangular one next to the e1-e3 lettering (i think) and aligns at roughly 12 o'clock again the corresponding mark is likely on the rear cover.

If you align up the camshaft pulley timing marks then look for the crank shaft pulley marks before takin off the belt these will be aligned up at TDC.

Well worth usin some crayon on the pulleys and where the marks are just incase you lose sight of them not that you should

If you have Spark and Fuel There is only two things that
will be the problem.


1.
Start CRYING the timing marks were not properly aligned
when the belts were installed.


2.
The Distributor is not installed with the rotter
pointing to the number 1 sparkplug wire terminal with the number 1 piston at
top dead center, and on the compression stroke. Compression stroke means the
intake and exhaust valves are both closed and the piston is at the top of the
cylinder. To get the piston in proper location at the proper time, remove the
number 1 sparkplug use the starter and just bump the starter until the timing
mark on the harmonic balancer is located close to the timing tab mounted on the
engine. To get the balancer mark to line up with the the timing tab, don't
crank the engine just bump the starter each time so the balancer mark only rotates
a short distance at a time. With the balancer mark close to the ZERO point on
the tab take a stiff long peace of wire, I say long wire, I mean one that will not
fall down in the cylinder to where it can't be retrieved without removing the cylinder
head. Use the wire to feel inside cylinder to see if the piston is at the top
of the cylinder. If it isn't rotate the balancer one revolution and feel for
the piston again. When the piston is at the top with the mark on the balancer aligned
with the tab on the engine, remove the distributor cap locate the number 1
sparkplug wire tower on the cap replace the cap on the distributor making sure
it sets down properly the cap has a tab made on the mounting edge that mates
with a notch in the distributor housing. Make sure they line up. Note the
location where the number 1 sparkplug tower is located you can use a peace of
chalk an make a mark on the side of the distributor housing indicating where
the rotter should point to. Before removing the distributor housing from the
engine notice where the vacuum canister is pointing so when the distributor is
properly timed the canister will be pointing in the same location. Make sure
the distributor gasket is in place before installing the distributor. When installing
the distributor the rotter will rotate in the distributor housing as it is
inserted in the Cam Shaft Gear, on some automobiles there is only one place the
distributor will completely go in to the distributor hole and let the base of
the distributor mate up with the top of the hole surface. If the rotter is not
pointing to the proper place continue removing and turning the rotter a little until
when the distributor is properly seated the rotter is properly alighned. Continue removing and installing the distributor
until the rotter points to the mark you made on the distributor housing and at
the same time the distributor housing is setting on the gasket not about a
quarter of a inch from bottoming out.

Ford Escort/Tracer 1991-1999 Repair Guide

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION 1.8L Engine

(see Figures 1, 2, 3 and 4)
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the timing belt covers.
  3. Rotate the crankshaft and align the timing marks located on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate.
  4. Remove the crankshaft pulley and hub.
  5. If the timing belt is to be reused, mark an arrow on the belt to indicate its rotational direction to enable correct re-installation.
  6. Loosen the timing belt tensioner lockbolt and remove the timing belt.
To install:
  1. Temporarily secure the timing belt tensioner in the far left position with the spring fully extended, then tighten the lockbolt.
  2. Make sure the timing marks on the timing belt pulley (crankshaft sprocket) and the engine block (oil pump housing) are aligned.
  3. Make sure the timing marks on the camshaft pulleys and the seal plate are aligned.
  4. Install the timing belt.
  5. Loosen the tensioner lockbolt. Using a suitable prying tool, position the timing belt tensioner so the timing belt is taut, then tighten the tensioner lockbolt.
  6. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise and align the timing belt pulley mark with the mark on the engine block.

  1. Make sure the camshaft pulley marks are aligned with the seal plate marks.
If the timing marks are not aligned, remove the belt and repeat the procedure.

Timing marks


If u cannot obtain the itming marks, u mite have to time the engine by first pricnciple. Ensure that #1 cylinder is @ TDC (compression stroke). Install the camshaft making sure that the cam lobes for #1 cylinder are on the lower side and not on the tip of the cam. Also when installing the distributor, ensure that it's set to spark @ #1 cylinder. In modern day vehicles, the distributor can only be fitted one way so theree is no need to time the ignition timing via distributor. If this is too much, u can check the crankshaft & camshaft sprocket for distinct timing markings . This should be checked when the components are clean
