I have repaired a number of these over the years, the main problem is usually the loading mechanism or the optics. Neither is cheap. Where are you located?

Both the loading carriage and the optics assemblies are sensitive to damage. Unfortunately some parts may no longer be available or if they are, they are not cheap. I do have some parts for these, but without seeing them, I'm not sure what they will need. The one that had the power surge is less likely to be fixable. Hopefully I am not violating any codes of conduct here, but contact me offline at the email address below and I'll try to assist further.

    Thanks,

    Dan

MDS-JE520 player makes chattering sounds==do you repair? Please send details--Thanks-- BOB

The only repair place I know of in the USA is ProDigital of Philadelphia who repairs digital broadcast equipment and Minidiscs subject to parts availability.
520s are mostly worn out at this late date try to find a 630 which does all of the same things better and is a newer unit.

Sony MDS-JE520 Mini Disc Machine no operation, standby led is illuminated, but pressing on/off button it does not respond

This is from my own experiance. I inadvertedly bent the cover of my deck and had the same error.
The minidisc is blocked in the loading mechanism. Too much weight on top of the deck can bend the cover and the metal support which is above the loading sledge. The slider is then blocked. When you connect the power you can hear a motor trying to move for as short instant.
Disconnect the deck from the power supply.
Take of the cover and check if the support is bent. carefully bend it upwards, if so. Reconnect power and check if the deck powers up..

That's my solution which worked for me.

BTW I second Obertellis advice to find a MDS-JE780 (or MDS-JB980) they are the most complete decks ever made by Sony

Can a MDS JE330 play minidiscs recorded by a "hi md" player? most md-players can not.

No. Only Hi-MD players/recorders can play Hi-MD's. They're a later and totally different technical specification. The discs may look superficially similar but it's like trying to play a Blu-Ray disc on a CD player.

MDS 503 STUCK IN STANDY MODE?

Is it an MDS-JE530? Do you have a minidisc in it? If yes, then unplug the unit. Slide the little switch from TIMER "OFF" to "PLAY", then plug the unit back in. After 10 seconds, it should turn on and start playing the minidisc. Let me know if that works or if we need to try something else, okay?
