Boom Bats are great. They are plastic tennis rackets but with a special plastic material instead of the net and they make a wonderful sound whenever the ball hits the bat.
Great fun for kids and grown ups!

Some people like to use gloves for batting if they are doing it often enough to cause callouses on the skin. They also help with gripping the bat but at a young age, they shouldn't have any problem. My daughter is an avid softball player, playing three to four times a week, and her hands are perfectly fine without gloves.
