Re: How to Adjust the Laser

If you are trying to adjust an old laser, don't bother it was set at the factory and the laser is wearing out, not going out of alignment. It's very common. It's been a long time since I read directions for this but as I recall it required an oscilloscope and was in no way easy. If you are up to the task I can try to find those directions again.

Hi My dvd player LG DVD 4950 does not read any discs. The lights come on when I turn on the power and the tray opens and I can insert the disc, then the display shows 00:00:00, and after a while goes to...

Hi, the chances are your having one of two problems, now the one problem you can have a go at solving yourself but the second option is not possible as you cant get the parts and paying someone to repair it would cost more than it would to replace the player.

anyway the problems you may be having maybe due to dirty or dusty laser leans or it could be that the laser has reached the end of its working life.

1 go to your nearest computer hardware store and buy a leans cleaning cd, these have little brushes on the bottom and when you put it in the player it spins round and these brushes clean the laser and this usually solves the problem, also buy a can of compressed air and make sure you dont hole the can upside down open the dvd tray and give it a good spray inside doing this will dislodge any dust thay may have built up on the laser.
give both of the above options a try and the chances are you will get it working again if not then the problem is going to be with the laser coming to the end of its life or it losing the power to read the dvd, now the problem with this is you cant get the parts anywhere you cant buy the laser unit and just fit a new laser in, this is a bad idea by the makers as most could be fixed by replacing the laser, the only option you have of getting it fixed and thats if you want it fixed is to buy another faulty one of the well known auction site, if you buy one thats the same make then the chances are the laser will be the same, now the problem with this is the faulty one you have bought could have the same problem so you could end up throwing your money away.

now their is another option, some lasers have pots which you can adjust but if this is something you have never done before then its not worth trying as getting it wrong could cause harm to your or others around you should you not get it back together properly, now not all lasers have these pots that you can adjust, their called potentiometers and what these do is adjust the power going to the laser, now if you use google and search for the following, how to adjust pots on dvd laser, then hit search then have a look through the posts, you will then see what im going on about, basically its a small screw you can turn either way and it will either give you more power if you turn it the one way or less if you turn it the other, to adjust it you will need a multimeter and just adjust it by a small amount and check the reading you should be getting and adjust it to what it needs to be to get it working again.

have a read through the sites, its not easy to do and their is no saying your laser has these pots as not all do so it may be of no use to you, if you take the case off the dvd player inside it you will find the same dvd rdrive as is in your home computer, they are exaclty the same so once you have the top casing off you are looking at a standard dvd drive for a computer the only difference is is the front part that opens up.

so if you have some skill with taking things apart and have had a go at fixing things like this before then you could take it apart and have a look and see what you can do.

please dont attempt this if you have no experiance what so ever, never switch it on whilst you have the case off,

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

Game is not loading and saying error to read disc and saying to clean disc or restart console but disc is clean and we restarted the console

The disc is either scratched or the xbox 360 drive laser is not reading it properly which is common for them. the only way to fix is replace the drive with the same exact one and swap the boards on them. or you can take apart the one you have now and slightly adjust the laser eye. i have adjusted a laser eye before and it worked afterwards. there are several tutorials on how to do this on the net. hope this helps let me know if i you need more help

Xbox does not read my brand new modern warfare 2 or dbz burst limit games it only seems to work on one game gears of war anyone know the problem ?

DVD drive is bad , sounds like the laser .if you have some mechanical skill you can replace the laser in the DVD ROM drive. . if you have access to a multimeter then you can adjust the "pot" on the laser and it will improve but will shorten the lifespan of the laser. If it can last till your new laser arrives in the mail then your great.

The only real way to fix it is to replace the drive or the laser unit , replacing xbox360 drives can be a complex operation if your not experianced . (can brick your drive or turn your 360 in to a fancy dvd player) if you open the case and identify your drive. Most sites that sell replacement parts for these consoles have easy to follow instructions for the product that you buy from them.

My xbox 360 BEN-Q drive has recently stopped working. I have tried EVERYTHING possible (POT Tweak, Cleaning the laser with alcohol, cleaning the entire xbox, making sure magnets are align). The laser still...

Replacing the laser should fix your system up just fine. You can find one at the following site for $16.95. The laser has two parts [obviously, since it has two POTs to adjust]. Most of the time, the DVD part will fail before the CD part. Replacing the laser should fix you up:

Games not playing

Hi, I have handled alot of the "open tray" errors. There are ways to fix the problem, it entails totally opening your 360 up and taking the DVD drive out and adjusting the laser strength, the problem with that is if you adjust it too high you will burn the laser out. And if you adjust it too low it won't read anything at all. The easiest way I have found to fix the problem is by buying a new laser. They are pretty inexpensive (I just bought one for $10.95 off of e-bay, with a 6 month warranty). And that cures the problem AND you don't have to worry about having it adjusted too high or too low. This fix has worked on 7 x-box 360's that I have repaired so far. And no-one has brought them back yet. The 360 depends on the laser to read if the tray is open or shut, unlike the Playstations which have switches that the tray hits when its open or closed. So, as the laser wears out, it can't read if the tray is open or closed because it can't read the disc.

Ps2 v13 disc error(not the usual fault though)new laser fitted and adjusted

Actually make sure you got a Brand new lens.On e bay or different place like that a lot people are selling lens for Brand New but they are not.
Have the antistatic point on the lens most of the time it doesn`t mean is new.I know a lot of laser are faulty because repaired or refurbished and can be one(of the most common) problem.
If you have any chance send back that laser for replacement.
Tweeeking the laser also is not a easy step. You need to know the exact value in Ohm about the laser and use a Multimeter to find out when the laser is in range.Tweeking to much will increase voltage on the laser and will burn it.
Try a different laser because motherboard error for only 1 format is not a common issue

Disc dosnt spin, but laser moves fine

This is the most common of the two problems with ps2 the one you have is the second most common problem the first being the laser itself not working and then you problem disk not spinning.
As you know the laser is moving the rules out the door catch mechanism being a problem so all thats left is the laser unit itself now your problem is the motor on the laser not working but the big problem you have is you just cant replace the motor on its own it comes as one unit with the laser.
Now buying one isnt a problem neither is fitting it but the problem is calibrating the new laser to do this you nedd osciloscope and these cost $1000 to buy so unless you have one then this is a problem also if you take it in to be repaired the repair cos allone would cost more than a new ps2 so it just isnt worth repairing if you look on a well known auction site you will see thousands of ps2 with your problem they just dont repair them any more its just not worth it.
youd be better of buying a new one it would be cheaper than the repair and also buying a new one means that it will last a bit longer.
Say you get yours repaired then next week it overheats then you have another problem related to the age of the console so at the end of the day it would be best to buy a new let me know if you need more help or advice.
Also the problem with the slimline one is you can adjust the laser because on the bigger ps2 you could adjust the laser by hand and get it to work again without any special tools but sony done away with this feature so that they got people to pay for repairs sorry i couldnt give you good news ok

My PS2 Slim plays music, black and blue discs, but doesn't play silver discs nor DVDs.

Is this a new problem or has your PS2 always had this issue? You cannot adjust the laser at all and are likely to damage it if you try, you can however clean the laser lens with a CD/DVD cleaning disk and you'd be surprised how often this resolves disk read issues. Some of these units did have a production fault that prevented them from reading DVD's, if your PS2 has had this fault since new and/or is under 12 months old you could probably have had it repaired/replaced by Sony but by opening it you will have invalidated you're warranty.

Adjusting the lens height using the gear

first do what i did. get a dvd movie,a ps one game,a cd based ps2 game (timesplitters, rune, dynasty warriors 2,half life)a dvd based ps2 game, and a scratched ps2 game. first adjust the azimuth(the torx screw to the left of the laser} make sure you use a cue tip and 91% alcohol on the lens and under the lens(you have to remove the black cover off the laser). I just got a broken ps2 for 5 bucks and that made it work perfectly.make the azimuth adjustments in 1/8 turns. try all games and especially the dvd movie carefully pull the white plastic wheel out of the top cover for the dvd drive. and pop that on the disk while its in the drive. turn it on and note what happens. if a disk is in the drive before it's powered on you should never see the browser it should just boot.If not you have problems. once all disks are booting good get a problem disk (I used a scratched tony hawk 3) and if the audio skips or freezes adjust the white cog wheel counterclockwise in 5 click intervals until it works perfect. if you are lucky it will work like new if not you might have a laser voltage problem and to fix that you need a variable scope ososcillator ( i know i missplelled it) under the laser is 2 pots to adjust the voltage for the cd laser and the dvd laser. the left is the cd one if its facing you. you can find the proper waveform pattern online in various places.i would just buy a Used ps2 because there preety chaep and definetly cheaper than the stuff needed to adjust the voltage correctly.IF YOU TRY TO ADJUST THE LASER YOU MAY BURN IT OUT.I did on my first one but since my friend was using it as a window stop and i got it for free i donn't care.So hopefully it works out for you guys. if i were you just buy a SEGA DREAMCAST it has none of these problems and is cheap as hell..............................................
