35 inch Mitsibutchi TV model #CS-35201A, serial #502637, manufactured 1993 TV made a popping sound when turned on and now only visable object is a straight horizontal colored line in middle of screen....

Hello dan82810,

The picture tube or CRT is not the problem, and yes this set is fixable. What has happened is that the vertical deflection circuit has malfunctioned. More precisely the vertical coupling capacitor has malfunctioned (The pooping sound was the capacitor exploding).

Open up your TV (take the back off and unplug the set), and look for the damaged capacitor, it will look puffy or if it has exploded.

To fix this problem you will need the schematic diagram for the TV (can be found at www.servicemanuals.net). Then you will need a multimeter to measure the DC voltages on the vertical output circuit, and finally an oscilloscope to measure the waveforms at the vertical output circuit and the input to the vertical windings of the deflection yoke transformer.

Now what you should basically find is a sawtooth wave at 60Hz which is the drive for the yoke transformer. However since the coupling capacitor is bad you will have the wave at the output of the vertical output stage, but not at the input of the yoke transformer. Use the schematic to find the value of the capacitor that has malfunctioned.

I hope this helps,

Thank you,

Plasma model ciwp4206 made by funai (inside samsung plasma)doesnt turn on, light blinks 9 times then nothing. thanks in advance

Remove diodes D2500 and D2501 (which are only protection, making the TV goes to standby instead of powering on) from the main power supply board. If the light does turn to a green one instead of going back to standby and you have the sound but no image, it should be the same problem as I had, which seems to be frequent with these Funai piece of junk.

You need to replace the ceramic capacitor C2258 on the main power supply board, it should be the faulty part as it was on mine. This capacitor is near an aluminium heatsink and was slightly burnt.

Here are the specs of that part from the service manual:
C2258 CAP CERAMIC HV 3300pF 2KV R K

As I didn't find a capacitor with these specs, I put two capacitors in parallel and it works fine now. Good luck!

Will not power up

I had a similar problem. Look for a burned/shorted out capacitor on the main board. (It is marked J-something I forgot), 10mm diameter ceramic capacitor, 1000pF 20k SON116175400
It is about 3-4" from the left edge of the main board (power supply side), near the middle of the board. It is close to a large transistor mounted vertically on a cooling plate. It is a special high-voltage capacitor, you can find it online. Check the large transistor - it may be damaged too (mine was ok). After installing the new capacitor I got good sound and really weak picture. I called a repair guy who found a bad chip - after 3 hours of looking. The TV works fine ever since. As I learned, in most cases all you need is a new $5 capacitor. If you had a good picture before, it is worth the "investment" to fix this problem.

This a deflection problem. Both 2-3 and 2-4 are deflection. Most likely a verticale problem. a tech will need to fix it.

Tv flutter

If your going to do the repairs yourself you can probaly get by fairly cheap, but service techs usually run between 3 and 6 hundred for video problems sounds like a capacitor issue. If you need a service manual and unlimited support for your set go to this link. Its 10.99 for the manual the supports free. They will mail it unless you return to the site and request that they email it along with the instructions on how to obtain the chat support. I am one of their support Techs, Hope this helps.
