First off does the motherboard have both sata and ide connections or just sata or just ide? (sata are small about maybe 1/2 inches in length and 1 mm wide and a ide connection is approx 5 inches long with about 4 inches long with over 100 pins and about 1/2 inches wide) i know that the opliplex 520 are nothing but sata so if it uses the same mobo as the 520 and you have ide then its imposible to install on your computer unless it either has a ide connection or you get a ide pci or pci-e controller card and install that onto the computer. but for the most part a ide connection needs a ide cable and a sata connection needs a sata cable.

The new HDD uses a SATA data interface as well as a SATA power interface. You will need a SATA cable as well as a power supply that supports the SATA power connectors. Since this is an older machine you will probably need to buy a SATA cable and a Molex to SATA power connector. This should cover any cabling issues that you are having.

When i turn on y tower on it says error loading operating system what do i do to fix this problem please help

First - re-seat the harddisk and reboot the computer. If this does not work then reboot and go to theBIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn'tdetect the hard drive then it could be faulty. Next - to determine if thehard drive is faulty, remove the hard drive and insert it into an USB hard drive adapter and connect it to a workingcomputer's USB port. If this computer cannot see itas an external hard drive and you cannot open the various folders and files, this confirms the hard drive is faulty. The hard drive needs to bereplaces in the computer and Windows installed and the Dell's device driversand your programs etc to get a functioning Dell computer again.

My dell optiplex gx280 motherboard is making a clicking sound

That clicking sound will be the hard drive which wont be lasting too much longer. If you have any important data / files i would back it up now before its too late to recover. Hard drives are quite cheap depending what size you need and quite easy to fit especially in that model computer. Cheers from Scott and please vote

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive
Test the leads that attach to your ((hard drive from the motherboard)) or replace all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your ((motherboard to hard drive))
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electrical extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

hope this helps

Dell Optiplex Gx280 - cant detect two IDE hard drives

Hi,

You should attach two hard drives on primary ide. Set both jumpers to cable select ( or one on end is master, middle one is slave). The one at the end of the cable is where your o/s should be. You could try putting the third on seconday, along with your dvd rom.

CANT GET WINDOWS XP PRO TO COPY FILES TO A GX280

The problem is the driver for the sata hard drive. You would need to get that from the dell site and put it on a floppy disk, then at the start of the windows install select to install that driver. I ended up just installing the rc version of windows 7 and it worked out fine.

Dell gx280 hard drive and dvd drive

You can buy adapters for this very thing. Less than 20 bucks at most computer stores. I looked on newegg and they were 11.99.
