Question about Kenmore 73872 / 73874 Top Freezer Refrigerator
Kenmore 253.73874302 Freezer works except vent freezes up preventing cold air going to fridge. Fan motor runs when compressor is running. How do I check the defrost timer? Where is it located? Could it be the heater? If so where is it located at? If I need to use a multi meter then please give me precise directions on what to set it on and where to put the prongs. Thanks!
Look at the control panel in the fresh food section on the bottom of this panel you will see a hole that is a little larger than some of the other holes using a flat blade screw driver you should be able to advance the timer manually into defrost. on some models of this refrig they used an elctronic timer that you cannot manipulate with a screw driver if this is the case just push the light switch in 5 or 6 times within 10 seconds.
once youve gotten into defrost you should hear popping noises and then sizzling noises indicating the heater has turned on (this usually will happen within first 2 minutes). if you hear this noise then the timer is bad. if the heater does not come on then you problem will most likely be bad def thermostat or heater.
remove the rear cover in the freezer compartment you will see a small round control clamped to the tubing on the upper right hand side of the coil it will have 2 wires coming off of it. WHILE THE CONTROL IS STILL ICED UP. disconnect the wires going to it and do a continuity test or ohms test with your multimeter across the control. with it still frozen the reading should be infinity. if the control checks good then you have a bad heater. all of these parts are available by your model number thru sears or a loal appliance parts supplier.
If you have any further questions let me know. thx peyton

This sounds like you have a bad defrost system, remove inside rear freezer panel and check for frost build up, If you have frost build up you need to check the defrost bi metal and the defrost heater, if they are both good the defrost timer or electronic control will have to be replaced, both bi metal and heater should have continuity
