Question about Computers & Internet
WHAT IS IT AND DO I STILL NEED IT SINCE I HAVE A NEW MOTEM?
If your new modem has a wireless aerial then it has a built-in wireless router. If not then you need to plug your new modem into the wireless router.

The router is a hardware firewall so your systems is already protected from intrusions. The internet can only see the routers i.p address and cannot see anything beyond that.If you want to be bulletproof do this as well. Do all your windows updates and keep them current. Get a good internet protection suite and keep it current.Norton Internet 2009 gets great scores from the experts and unlike old Norton products it is not a rescouce hog.It does all Antivirus,Spyware and Malware, root kit protection, anti phishing and tons more.

Open any web browser, such asInternet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. In the address bar, enter"192.168.0.1" (without the quotes) and press the enter key. This willbring up the login prompt for most Netgear wireless routers. If that doesn'twork, try "www.routerlogin.net", "192.168.0.5", or"10.1.10.1" until the login window appears.
Enter the username "admin"(again, without the quotes), and the password "password" in theappropriate fields, then click OK to login. If that password fails, try"1234," "Password" (with a capital "P"), or"admin" until you are greeted with the settings screen.
Make any required changes to thesettings. Under security, it is possible to specify a new username and passwordfor added security. Once you are done, close the window, and the system willautomatically log you out.

You have connected the LAN cable from the modem into the correct Internet port on the router.
This error message you got could mean you have a faulty cable. To test the cable, connect the cable from the modem to your computer's LAN port to see if it connects to the Internet. If not, the cable is faulty and needs to be replaced.
