Question about ASUS K8N-DL Motherboard

1 Answer

Just set up k8n-dl motherboard with windows vista premium. with geforce 8600 gt (pcie16). It installed windows but after installing the drivers from either windows update or from nvidia the system boots to a black screen and all activity stops. I then have to push the power button to shut down. It will boot to safe mode.

After I install service pack 1 that the machine does this. It boots up fine before I install SP1. (Which has the signed for windows Vista logo)

I also tried installing the card in windows xp 64 professional. After the drivers were loaded the system locked after restart. Had to boot into safe mode to change to generic video drivers and it booted up fine with 600x800 and 4bit color. THE CARD IS DAMAGED. Sent it back for refund.

Have you tried just using the drivers straight from the manufacter? Also make sure you have SP1 installed.

Can i put nVIDIA geforce 8600 on my p5sd2-vm

Yes, your Asus motherboard will support the Nvidia GeForce 8600 PCI-Express graphics card.
However one thing you should consider. The 8600 card is SLI compatible but the motherboard only has one PCI-E x16 slot.
You will also need to make some changes in your bios.
In order to help you configure your system for a PCI-E graphics follow these steps.
1. Uninstall your current display driver software through windows control panel. Windows may ask you to restart your system, do not restart. Shut windows down which will shut off the system.
2. Unplug the power cable from the system & open your case.
3. Install your 8600 card. (Double check it is installed correctly & if needed has the extra power cord connected to the card.
4. Re-connect the power cord.
5. During boot up enter the bios by pressing the Delete key every couple seconds.
6. Once in the bios click the Advanced tab, see top of page 2-19 in your manual.
7. Than open Onboard Device Configuration
Open North Bridge Configuration, see page 2-22
Change Primary Graphics Adapter to [PCI-E]
Change Internal VGA to [Disable]
Change Share Memory Size to [Disable]

8. Save Bios changes & exit. Your system will auto restart.
Once windows has finished loading install the 8600 driver software & directX 10.0. You can also go to nVidia & download the latest software driver @

2. Go to the Control Panel, Programs and uninstall the current nvidia driver.
3. Shut down computer.
4. Remove video card and re-install it.
5. Start computer and install new nvidia driver.

I am looking for XFX 8500 GT driver for Windows Server 2003 32 bit. How can I get it. xfxforce.com does not have any driver for this OS. Please help me.

So you need to change the OS. Install Vista. It's great. And hopefully you can do an in-place install, so it won't delete the files.

Yes vista will format & install on the new drive. Just make sure if there is an o/s on the old drive that you set up windows vista as a dual boot if you wish to keep using the o/s on the old drive. Hope this helps.

Video Problems

Hello!

Maybe you need to install the correct driver of your video card. But first update your motherboard driver, if you have CD/DVD utilities enlclosed in your computer from the vendor then you should reinstall that in series installation. after that installation restart the system and then install the updated driver or the current CD/DVD utilities of your geforce 8600 GT and again restart the system after installation. and then set the monitor display to the required display of your games.

May this help, best regards, melnavz

CMOS Settings for PNY GeForce 8600 GT

One question, why do you want to change the voltage of the PCI express, have you by any chance overclocked your machine? If not the default values should do fine since the 8600GT is not a power hog.

If you have overclocked then the recommendation is that you try to see if you set the PCI frequency to 100 (default) so that the PCI-e bus does not get overclocked, as its known that some devices fail when the bus is increased (such as the SATA hard disks, etc).

You will also not have to change the voltage of the PCI-E bus unless you have aggressively overclocked your machine.
