I solved the hardward error:502 but it happens a lot and I have to play with the clear tape that goes across the cartridge carrier. Now, I am getting a signal saying cartridge error 50C. I put in a brand new cartridge and reset both cartridges (black and color) several times. I still get this error. What does that means? One user said I need to get a new cartridge ******** (black and blue). I don't believe this is a problem. Something is wrong with cartridge carrier. Please advice on how can I fix it?
Thanks
The "clear tape" that you are playing with is called the "encoder strip." A barcode is etched on it that tells the printer carriage where it is. If you clean this carefully (google encoder strip for best methods) you may be able to get rid of 502 error for a while.

The problem is simple. The Shiny Silver bar that your Print Cartridges glide back and forth on is the PROBLEM!!!
When the motor that moves the cartridges left and right HAVE TOO MUCH RESISTANCE, YOU GET THE HARDWARE ERROR: 502.
How I fixed it is simple. Take some kleenex, and with power unplugged, clean the bar very well. Then Spray some WD-40 on a Kleenex, and lubricate the shaft!!
You just need to check the connection of the cable between led and motherboard for that you need to open you tower. This is not an operating system error its just that hardward LED is not connected with mother board.
Hi there Error 50c This happens a lot in dell printers.
Regarding the Dell A940 "Error 50c"....the user guide doesn't seem to mention "Error 50c". They do, however, mention a "Cartridge Error" on page 52 of the manual. They claim this means that the printer has detected a short circuit (fuse/resister) in the cartridge. As you may or may not have noticed in the manual, this is what they recommend doing about it:
1) Press Power to turn the printer off.
2) Lift the printer cover/lid (scanner unit) until the scanner support holds it open.
3) Turn the printer on. The ink cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position unless the printer is busy.
4) Remove the color ink cartridge.
5) Lower the printer (scanner unit) until it is completely closed. If the error message displays again, replace the black cartridge with a new black cartridge.
If the error message does not display, repeat steps 1–3 and then go to step 6.
6) Reinstall the color cartridge and remove the black ink cartridge.
7) Lower the printer (scanner unit) until it is completely closed.
If the error message displays again, replace the color cartridge with a new color cartridge. If there is no error message (indicated by flashing lights), repeat steps 1–3 and then reinstall both ink cartridges. 8) Lower the printer (scanner unit) until it is completely closed.
If you get the error message again, while both cartridges are installed, replace both of the cartridges.
Basically, what they want you to determine is,....if the short circuit is with the "black ink" cartridge or the "color ink" cartridge and then replace the cartridge that has the problem.
You may have to buy a new cartrige. Please all I ask is call back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one, so I will keep on helping.

On the metal rod that the cartridges travel on, Just wipe this rod with a kleenex and the problem seems to go away. Somehow it presents a drag on the cartridges and causes an error.
Dell gets this lots so have a try.

Remove the color ink cartridge then lower the cover of your printer. If the error message displays again, replace the black cartridge with a new one (or return the new one). Reinstall the color cartridge and remove the black ink cartridge then lower the cover. If the error message displays again, replace the color cartridge with a new color cartridge.
Note: My manual indicated that the printer might have detected a short circuit in a cartridge. I returned a month old black cartridge got a new one and my printer is working fine now. Good luck.

This happened to me two days ago. We did a live chat with HP and they took us to a special menu in the machine. We had to erase the error and then reset. It is working perfectly now.
HOLD down * key and then # key and let both go at the same time.
Hit and release in sequence 1,2,3.
Using right arrow key go to configuration menu.
Hit OK.
Hardward Failure status.
Hit OK.
To clear press OK.
Hit OK.
Cleared.
Cancel back out to main menu.
Shut down with on button.
Unplug from machine then wall.
Wait 30 seconds.
Reverse process to turn back on.
It will cycle through its beeps and clicks.
Do a test print.
TADAHHHH!!!
I had the same error message 50c and "color Ink low". I knew that I still had Black Ink, and that is what I just needed for the moment, so I removed the color Ink cartridge and it started working. You'll get a message 'print cartridge missing' but just press continue.
Hope this helps,
