Remove Intermatic 60 min. wall timer face plate only from wall

The Intermatic face plate seems bigger than the cover plate. Does the knob come off in order to only remove the face place? I want to paint the wall behind it.

That knob should just pull straight off. Check to make sure there isn't a tiny set screw on the side, but otherwise you can pull it off and remove the cover plate.

FF30 Intermatic timer: The turning knob pulls off.
(With some really old models, 1960s, there is a small set screw on the fat end of knob.)
Under the knob is a small hex nut that twists off to remove plate.

I cant get the older (10 yrs) timer out to see if my junction box will hold a newer digital model. I tried to pull the knob out but it doesnt budge. There doesnt seem to be a set screw.

If following information does not apply, then add a comment with in-focus photo of timer posted on flickr, for possible help.
All timers are attached to electrical box with 2 screws that are usually hidden by a cover plate.
Some really old timers have a set screw on the knob itself.
Most 'knob' timers fit onto a shaft by friction. Put a pry bar under it and force it off.
If timer is attached to cover plate, see if you can break the cover plate.

The knob pulls off.
Use small screwdriver to pry it up.

Really old FD and FF series timers, the knob has tiny set screw in end of knob.
I haven't seen one with set screw for years

I need to replace the timer. How do I get it off? There are no screws on the cover plate and the knob does not pull off. I can not find a way to remove the fixture??

The plate is held by a nut that is located under the knob.

Pull the knob back and it slides off, and you can see a small 8-sided hex nut.

The nut is a bit hard to grab, but you can wrestle it off with a pair of ordinary pliers.

I need to remove the intermatic switch from my wall.

If this timer has one knob, there should be two removable pins put one pin into the time you want to start and put the other pin in the time you want it to stop. Then set to current time

Intermatic EJ500 gets VERY HOT on metal portion around timer

Sounds like you have too much load. The device is using its heatsinks like they were designed for. To dissipate heat.
