First, you will probably have to buy the replacement light, which is a Z-187, 125v-20w lamp assembly, and a tamper-proof star key set, each of which are available for less than ten bucks on the web.Only other tool that you will need is a Philips head screwdriver, though you might find pliers helpful to remove the old lamp assembly from its spade connectors.
All the warnings of potential dangers of this project are valid, but taking care not to rush the project and only touch items as necessary will minimize risks.Needless to say, keep children and pets away from the disassembled oven, even after the plug has been pulled.
Unplug the microwave and remove the four tamper-proof screws along the back of the top cover, using the T20 key, and the three Philips-head screws along the side of the cover.Carefully lift up the cover of the oven.
Handling your new bulb by its base to keep moisture and body oils from the glassy portion, use it as a reference to locate the old bulb.It should be poking out of the top of the right side of the oven, upside down, with its spaded connectors sticking up.With luck, a sticker with a vague description of the bulb will still be stuck next to the light.Remove the Philips-head screw holding the bulb in place and pull out.Pull the connectors off the old bulb, and put them on the new assembly, being careful to keep the bulb as clean as possible.Put the bulb back in the hole, reinstall the screw, and put the cover back on the microwave by reversing the above instructions.
Enjoy!

The control circuit board needs to be removed and repaired. We routinely repair these from customers nationwide for $32.50. It sure beats the cost of a new board!

be very careful cos microwaves can kill - there is very high voltage present even when disconnected from mains. unplug from mains & leave for 1 hour. remove cabinet. there is a fuse which controls everything usually located near the transformer or where the mains cable enters. check fuse and replace. it needs to be the correct fuse for the appliance

SOURCE: Changing light bulb in microwave oven

If there's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (and the owner's manual doesn't address it) some disassembly may be required.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

The screws you need to remove should be pretty obvious, but a special driver (such as a T20H type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Bulbs can be had in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

The light bulb assembly (bulb and socket are all one piece) is part number
WB36X951.

It is located on the air duct assembly where the door switches are mounted.

You can see an exploded view diagram here.

You'll need to remove the outer cover (wrapper) to get to the bulb assembly.

If there's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (most often on the rear or side) and the owner's manual doesn't address it, then disassembly will be required.

You'll need to remove the outer cover (wrapper) to get to the bulb.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there. There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), instead.

If not, chances are you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

If you don't have your instructions, please reply back with your brand and model number.

Once it's out of the wall, the outer cover (wrapper) will need to be removed, just as you'll need to do on a counter top model.

On a counter top model, be sure it's unplugged, but otherwise ignore the instructions above this paragraph.

My Sunbeam Microwave SGB8901 lights up and seems to be working, but it doesn't heat anything. Is this fixable?

Only 2 years old? Hopefully you still have owner's manual, troubleshooting section should help you look for the problem. Hopefully, there is a circuit breaker, or perhaps a fuse. I hope it was not used with a metal object accidentally. No help? Check with Sunbeam Customer service, be nice, they usually are helpful.

I shorted out the counter lights on my frigidair microwave. The microwave works but not the lights. I've replaced the bulbs. What next?

The metal base may have fused together from electrical arcing when the old bulb was removed. The entire bulb receptacle (socket) will have to replaced. If you cannot do that yourself, the cost would be excessive. Just live without the light as long as the microwave gets the job done.

I got this Sunbeam SGB8901 microwave that doesn't heat anything. It turns on, rotates drink or food, and it sounds like it's working fine, but once the timer counts down, you pull out the drink and it's...

That will either be the magnetron or the power transistors inside having failed. If you get lucky a repair shop might be able to fix it reasonably but usually it is time to look for a replacement as the repairs cost more than the new one.

Exterior light is not working. The fan turns on, but the lights won't when the button is pressed.

Is the light bulb burnt out? Try replacing the light bulb and see what happens.
