Question about Oster 5838 ExpressBake Bread Maker

1 Answer

Shorting out about 2 hours into a 3 hour breadmaking cycle the machine is shorting out -- upon inspection of the coil -- i see 2 spots on the coil that are making burn marks on the inside casing --- I probably need a new coil -- is it worth the replacement of the coil? and if so, where would I get one to fit -- I have looked for parts and only see belts and paddle replacements

Hello m606walsh,

From what you've said, it sounds like the coil is expanding due to heat (or perhaps other stresses, can't tell without looking) and getting too close to the inside case, resulting in scorch marks.

You may not need a new coil - - try adjusting the one you have so it's not so close to the case. Since you didn't say so, I'm presuming that the case isn't so badly scorched that it needs replacement as well.

I'm not finding a heat coil in my usual list of spare-parts sources either, so finding genuine OEM parts may not be an option, but here are the three possible fixes that seem reasonable.

1) Contact Oster - - the Breadmaker 800# is 800-438-0935 - - and ask about their recommendations for parts or repair. They will likely not want you doing electrical repairs yourself, and will probably refer you to a service center.

Here's the URL for their Service Center Finder page:

2) Consider buying either
- a used machine for parts (I'd start by hunting on eBay or other online auction sites like
- a new machine and use your old one for parts (aka cannibalism).
I've used this strategy on both cars and computers - - often makes more sense than trying to hunt a spare part when you need it.

3) (I don't really recommend this unless you want to make this a hobby/quest) Pull the part and start visiting local appliance repair shops to see if it's an "off-the-shelf" standard OEM part. This can easily take more time than it's worth - - new breadmakers of this model are going for ~$70-$80 (plus shipping) on eBay and other online sources.

If I can be of further assistance, let me know.

If this solves the issue, please rate it accordingly.

Thanks in-advance for using,

If you wouldn't mind, what I should have included in my "complete and thorough answer" to have earned a "FixYa" rating? "Thanks for trying" is for when I offer advice that didn't really cut it (which I try to avoid doing).

I don't want to seem snobby or ungrateful; rather, my goal with each solution I provide is to earn that rating, and I care if my solution was in some way deficient.

FYI - to maintain my "Expert" rating with, I'm expected to
provide at least 30 free fixes monthly, and keep an adequate percentage
of satisfied responses - - I need to provide answers that are accurate,
    complete and effective.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Fisher washer stays on clen for over 3 hours

"Fisher washer stays on clen for over 3 hours" ???
I think you mean the "Dishwasher stays in the clean cycle for over 3 hours", right? First question is "What cycle?" If it's the Pots and Pans cycle, or "Pro-wash cycle" , or "Normal cycle with extra wash heat or sani-rinse options selected, then yes, this is normal! A Normal cycle (without added heat) will take about 2 hours. And a short or quick or 1-hour cycle will take less.

Welbilt bread machine kneading wont start.making ticking sound

some bread machines warm the ingredients before any mixing starts. If your breamachine doesn't start mixing within 1/2 hour then you DO have a problem. Give it a half hour before you assume it is broken.

Dishwasher takes 3 hours to run through programme

3 hours isn't "extremely" long. If you run a normal cycle, it should run about 2-2:30 hours normally with the drying cycle. Now if it's over 3 hours, that would be a problem. Make sure that when you open the door that there is a lot of steam coming out, because that is the only thing that can extend the cycle is if the dishwasher isn't heating the water. Unfortunately this is a very common issue and it means that your control board inside the door has failed. There is a relay on the board that shorts out. This relay sends power to the heater, so when it fails the dishwasher doesn't wash well and it will run forever trying to heat the water which will never happen.

Use wooworths elevation breadmaker

A bread machine that works correctly goes through these basic cycles. If your machine did not do this then it is broken and you need to replace it. The cycles are, Mix.....Rise....Mix......Rise....very short Mix of a few rise of over 1/2 hour......bake of approximately one hour......I sell good used machines that will come with a full money back 30 dayguarantee (shipping, everything) You can reach me at or my website

Dough Will Not Rise

No, you shouldn't have to do anything special to it. There is something wrong with your recipe, ingredients, or your machine. Have you baked in your machine before and had success or is this your first try? Unless you are doing a rapid bread cycle. The full program will take 3- 4 hours. If I were you I would let it run and see if it turns out OK. 100 % whole wheat is going to be smaller than white bread.

Looking for recipe for rapid rise white bread

Rapid Cycle White Bread
  • 1-2/3 cups warm tap water
  • 2 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 4-1/2 cups bread flour or regular white flour
  • 2 tablespoons dry milk powder
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons bread machine yeast
Measure the ingredients into the bread pan in the order listed. Make a well in the flour and sprinkle the yeast into it. Set the machine to it's Rapid or Quick Cycle. On my machine this lasts for 80 minutes, or 1 1/3 hours. Press Start, and let the machine work it's magic. Remove the cooked bread from the pan after baking and allow it to cool before slicing.

Our dishwasher takes about 3-4 hours to run a cycle. My brother has the same model and it takes about an hour. Is there an adjustment that we can make to correct this? Thanks, Karla

make sure that your filter in the bottom is clean and if you are using the automatic wash cycle, it will wash until the water is clean. Sometimes it will take an hour, sometimes it will take close to 2 depending upon the level of dirty dishes in the dishwasher. And don't rinse! They work better on dirty dishes.

My Regal 6725 kneading blade does not turn when the machine is started. What can I do?

Some machines take a few minutes to start turning if the interior temp is too cold. Some always have a delay on whole wheat cycles. If it doesn't start kneading after 1/2 an hour then there is a problem. Let me know if it doesn't start kneading after about 1/2 hour.

The washing cycle takes 2 hours to complete

Make sure the sani cycle is not selected, or pots and pans, also with the dry cycle most will take about 2 hours, if your dishes are not that dirty use the short cycle. Be sure your water is at least 130 F. Run hot water at faucet before starting the machine.

Need help with timer

The timer's lowest setting is the time it takes for the cycle (depending on which cycle u choose) to finish. If your machine has the ultra fast cycle, then you'd be able to make a regular white bread in an hour. else, you'll have to settle for the minimum of 3 hours to make a bread.

Here is the link to two manuals that have the same recipes. Hope this helps.
