If there is a screw in the bottom of the carb bowl, run it all the way in till it bottoms, while counting the number of turns this takes. on my unit it is 2 turns. Then remove the screw. This will cause fuel to drain from the bowl, (use an old can to catch the fuel) and flush out any terah that may be in the bowl. Then reinstall the screw till it bottoms, and loosen it the number of turns you counted at the beginning. Start the unit, warm it up, then load it. If it surges, turn the screw one way or the other in 1/4 turns as needed and see if it smooths out.

Replace the pink plastic jet and two O-rings (center of carb) and clean out the shaft they are in with Q-tip and solvent, blow out with compressed air prior to assembly, make sure a old O-ring is not down in the hole as this is a very common mistake made by many who make repairs, one O-ring will remain in the shaft after you pull the jet out. 4 out of 6 gens that surge have this problem especially if you hear a small amount of backfiring . the bottom jet must be very clean as well if it is the newer model without the thumb screw.

If it still surges after this unscrew the nut that holds the bowl This is the main jet, make sure hole (jet) is clean.

run the engine up no load screw it out untill the engine runs rich then slowly turn it back in untill it clears..then load it and do the same.

the arm is the govenor trying to play catch up this is normal.
tis is of corse that it has the mixture screw in the bowl..

If not remove the bowl locate the jet and clean it..

Serges up and down and stalls after a fes coleman maxa 5000 er plus

Hi mxdidit,

Surging is generally caused by carburetor problems. Squirt some carb cleaner in it and see if that helps it at all. If that helps but does not do a lot, then the carb probably needs to be rebuilt. The carb could also just need some adjusting. Check for fuel leaks around the carb and also be sure the air filter is clean.
Good luck.

Hope this helps. If it does, I'd appreciate your vote. Thanks,

Handie Andie

Coleman 5000 watt generator Tecumseh 10 hp engine. Surging r.p.m. Carburetor has been gone through 2 times, and still not correct. Any information will help!!!

it's running lean.....try resetting the choke partially when it begins to surge.....not completely closed, but enough to richen the fuel mixture (that's all a choke does btw..)
if that helps or clears the problem, your carb is outta whack.....cheaper to buy a new carb than keep taking back into the shop.

Powermate Maxa 5000 er will not run stably

Check the fuel filter. My company designed hybrid generators that are far more efficient. They use batteries to power your equipment, and the generator runs intermittantly to recharge the batteries when needed.

Surging 5000w Coleman Generator

I had a Colman that only surged when it had a large load on it. ConsumerReports.org says that some Coleman generators just can't hold a constant voltage. Hondas are expensive but very good,.

Three year old coleman 5000/6250 generator. High

Your RPM's are too high. There is no voltage regulator in coleman generators (generator is actually made by generac) and is 100% dependent on engine speed. There is a screw under the tank when your looking in from the recoil side. It controls the governor arm. Screw it in and it incresses the rpm, out decrease. Plug something in that draws a decent load while setting the rpms since you want it to put out 120 and 240 underload. Your idle voltage does not matter.

What type of oil for a Coleman 5000 Generator?

You need a quart of regular old SAE 5W30 motor oil with detergent.
The engines on these generators are more or less the same as a lawn mower.
Don't forget to service/change the air cleaner when you change the oil, that should keep your generator producing full power.

Carl

Coleman generator OHV3000

The carburetor is probably clogged up. Mix a bottle of carburetor cleaner with the gas to see if that would help. Also check/replace the fuel filter.
