Problem with belkin router

I am currently using a dsl internet connection and have recently installed a belkin router. when i try to get on the internet using dsl and the router it is unable to connect. however, sometimes i can unplug power to the dsl box and power to the router and wait a few minutes and plug the dsl box back up wait a few minutes, plug the router power on and wait a few minutes and it might work. to me it sounds like there is a problem communicating between the dsl box and the router. i can always unplug power to the router and have internet cable just through the dsl box. any help is greatly appreciated!

If you can get your hands on a Linksys router, or any brand other than Belkin, give it a try and see if the problem is still there.

Assuming you are connecting wirelessly; you may have to check that the router is allocating ip addresses automatically to your pc's. connect one of your pc's to the router via the RJ45 network cable that was supplied and not wirelessly and type 192.168.2.1 in your internet browser, this will take you into the routers setup menu. Look for a menu refering to 'DHCP' and make sure that this is enabled, then look for the channel number that the router is using (normally 6 or 11) and make a note as if you are still experiencing signal loss, you can get back into the router and change to any channel between these numbers incase you are getting appliances interfering with the signal, save and exit from the router menu. disconnect the cable then go to control panel, network connections and right click on the connection you are using whether it is wired or wireles and click on properties. Look for the line TCP/IP and again click on the line and select properties, then make sure automatically obtain ip address is selected, ok and close window. Restart the pc's and you should have a connection.

So if you connect the computer directly to the modem , it works .
That means your modem is working properly. Your ISP is DSL connection. Now connect the modem to the router and the computer to the router. Open the router xet up page and change the settings of the router according to the type of connection you have.
There are 2 types of connection in DSL.
DHCP and PPPOE .

Problem with connection to router and DSL

I would go to run and type in cmd. then type in ipconfig, I believe that is right for windows 98. I would look on there and see if that is getting a correct IP and if the DNS server says 192.168.0.1 if it is a belkin router. ipconfig /? will give you the commands you can use with that. There is a ipconfig /renew that will refresh them all. You might have it set to be a static IP and you would want it to be dynamic and have it refresh by itself. You can go to http://hippo.colorado.edu/info/ipsetup/staticip_setup.cgi?os=win98 for directions to change it to dynamic, I would just do the opposite of what they suggest to make it auto config. It sounds like it is looking for a previous DNS server which is not there anymore because the DSL connection reset.

DSL/dialing connection?

No, the router will do the connection for you. All you will need to do is open up your Internet browser and you will be able to connect to the Internet without having to use the connection icon from your DSL provider. If you are still unable to browse the Internet but the Router screen does say it is connected try restarting the computer.
