Question about Seagate ST1.2 ST68022CF 8 GB ATA-33 Hard Drive

1 Answer

No detection or read

I had 2 I/O Magic Gigabank 8gb portable drives. They both spontaneously stopped being detected in Windows XP. One clicks in a cyclical way and seems to want to start. The other has a similar cyclical electronic noise but without so much clicking. This problem seems too common with these - see I need to recover the data on both drives, hopefully without the expense of a data recovery service. I took apart the drives and carefully removed the drives, which are both Seagate ST1.2 ST68022CF 8 gb drives, 2006 vintage. I plugged each into a Compact Flash reader and tried to detect and read them. The problem persists, except that with one of them, it sometimes reads is detected on the F drive but does not read, and it also seems to stall or delay other programs. A solution to reading and recovering the files would be appreciated. Thanks. Jbones

Re: No detection or read

You could try to download and install FTK - Forensic Tool kit to grab the info. But sadly if the memory won't detect, your looking at having to use expensive software/hardware to grab the info.

Re magic 8 gigabank: How do format the disc - wipe

You should be able to format the drive by right clicking on the drive and selecting format from the context menu. Normally it will select the same format type when you do this. I would get the properties first (right click | Properties) and then when you choose format make sure it is selecting the same type.

There are other options, but this is the easiest. Let me know what happens.

Pen drive problem

Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK. 2. click Disk Management. The Disk Management window will appear.
3. On this disk management window, you can see some drives including the portable drive. Right click on your portable drive and click change drive letter and paths.
4. assign a new drive letter which is not used by any of your drives in My Computer.
5. After assigning the new drive letter your pen drive will show in my computer.

Computer does not read my gigabank 8.0; no access to data

These drives are pretty sturdy but it sounds like the USB control circuit may be dead.

If this is the case what to do next comes down to what's on the drive. If there is nothing important on the drive which isn't backed up somewhere else. Buy a new one for $30 and recopy the file on the new one. If you need the files on it you can send it out for data recovery, anywhere from $100-$1500 depending on which part failed. I know a few places able to help you if you need this option. If you need the pros reply back with your Country, State and City and I will refer you to an appropriate pro for the job.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Can not open Gigabank 8gb in windows xp

Read this article but only the Response section from
the site-reader:
Wow, you have purchased a "magical" device
that judging from the response from other owners like
you, its a disappointing investment :)

When you decide to crack it open and take the CompactFlash card to your card reader, you should aware
that you will suffer greater risks of damaging it, okay?
I have warned you :)

The I250HD35 is plug-and-play with Windows XP. That means that all of the drivers needed to run your hard drive are included in Windows.

If your computer is asking for drivers when you plug in your drive, one of two things is probably happening:

1) Windows XP doesn't know where to look for the right drivers

2) Your drive has malfunctioned

The easiest way to assess which of these is happening is to take your drive and plug it into another computer that is running Windows XP. If it is detected properly on the other machine, then your computer doesn't have the right drivers or is looking in the wrong place for them. If it doesn't, then I/O Magic will be happy to replace your drive if it is still within the warranty period

If it is detected properly on another Windows XP machine, then when it asks for drivers, make sure to point it to the WindowsINF directory. This is where the default drivers are located.

If your drive is not detected properly on the other computer, your drive is probably experiencing a hardware malfunction. Please visit the I/O Magic website at and click on Support for specific return information.

Have a nice day,

Wont show at all (E drive ) when i go to my computer

Possibly 2 reasons:
1. A tweaking utility (such as TweakUI) was used to remove drive letter assignment.  You need to use the same utility to restore it back;
2. USB port error which could either be software or hardware:
2.1 Software - try uninstalling all instances of the USB in your Device Manager, reboot. Windows will autodetect and auto reinstall;
2.2 Hardware - the port(s) could be faulty which could either be the +5V supply (which would mean a burnt surface mounted fuse or fusible link) or the I/O where the data pins go to.

If you have other USB devices and they work, then chances are it's #1; if they also do not work then it's #2

Hope this be of some help. Post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.
