Question about Hotpoint WMA35 Front Load Washer

1 Answer

Hotpoint WMA35 Hi, My WMA35 which is 5 to 6 yrs old has stopped spinning and there are sparkes comming from the bottom of the machine, about a week ago I noticed that it had not spun properly and was amking an unusual noise although it wasn't loud more a whirring sound? I just did a gfast spin on the clothes and all was fine, we checked the filter that was fine then tried a spin and saw the sparks, we then did another spin to see what might be happening and thats when we saw the sparks underneath. we then put it on spin again and it won't spin at all now. All programmes still seem to work except spin,

Cheers I'll let hubby know when he gets in from work.

We thought it may be brushes, they sound easy to replace, thanx to you, any idea how much they are and best place to get them online?

If its the motor I suppose its not worth fixing, What do you think? thanks in bundles!

  • kezzerboy Jan 23, 2009

wow cheers for prompt reply, hubby will have to have a look tonight, if it seems its the brushes hopefully we will be able to find out what sort of motor it is from the motor itself and them will be able to determine what brushes we need.

Many many thanks for all your help. I would like to fix it as up to date we have never had a problem with it. If I have to replace I'm not sure if I we be able to afford a good enough hotpoint at the mo.

hi brushes measure 10ml, both of them so does anyone know if it is worth replacing them or could it be that it is perhaps the motor broken and not the brushes needing replacing,

    thanks

  • kezzerboy Jan 27, 2009

Excellent, I will order brushes this week and let you know the outcome.

Again many, many thanks, much appreciated.

Remove lower rear cover of washer, remove belt, undo 2 screws securing motor, remove motor wiring plug,, lever back motor and remove motor.

Remove carbon brushes at end of motor, and check for wear, if less than 8-10mm long, then replace them.
Clean armature with emery cloth or sandpaper before fitting new brushes, if it still does not work then the motor is probably faulty.
Plz rate my solution.
Thanks.

The brushes are easy to replace, but there are several different versions depending on the make of motor fitted., you need to determine the make of motor to ensure you get the right brushes.

You should not be paying more than £20.00 or so for them.

    Go to www.hotpoint.co.uk

You will be presented with a list of suppliers to obtain the brushes.

I do not think it wise to fit a new motor, as some times the faulty motor can cause the main circuit board to blow, so you fit a new motor and it still does not work.

I think it is worth the gamble, and fit a new pair of brushes.like I said ,and if it does not work then call it a day.

Hi, I've just done a wash on my Hotpoint WMA35 but it will not do the spin cycle. I hear the usual whirring sound as if the spin is about to start, but it doesn't. I've rearranged the load but still...

Any flashing lights or extra solid lights on the control board? By "spin cycle", do you mean the final spin cycle and drainage of water through waste pipe (basically, I want to know if the washer spins then fails, or fails to begin any rotation of the drum whatsoever). I'm having problems with my WMA35 myself, so it'd be interesting to see if this a common fault.

Excessively noisy when it spins. The faster the spin the noisier it gets.

Sounds like the Drum Bearings are gone they are **** on Hotpoint..Could be quite expensive depending on age...3 years old you will need a half drum complete with Bearings approx cost £80 plus labour....if more than 4 yrs old then perhaps bearing kit plus 3 hrs labour....Hotpoint give a FREE 5 yrs parts warranty however CALL CHARGE....£105 approx parts are free.....You need to ecide if you should fix or just buy a new one........

it is as easy as the older modles but the motor is at the bottom and you have to take out the motor to replace the carbon brushes hope this helped.

Hotpoint WMA35 - Noisy on spinning

This could be the bearings.

If it is you have two options:
1 - Buy another washing machine
2 - DIY possible for about £30 with all the RIGHT TOOLS, £100 if doing it properly. And even with the right tools this will take you about 3 hours, probably more.

To replace the bearings you NEED to have:
1) The parts - The replacement bearing kit (£30) and hotpoint recommend a new spider (£65) as well.
2) A tool to push the drum shaft from the casing.
3) A tool to remove the beaings. It is possible to buy a new rear casing with the bearings already fitted for about £70.
4) Patience and a supply of tea!

Method
1 - disconnect everything and I mean everything see number 2.
2 - remove the drum casing from the chasis
3 - take off the pulley wheel
4 - open the casing
5 - remove the drum from the casing. DO NOT USE A HAMMER as the shaft deforms very easily (good job I've a new "spider"!)
6 - fit new "spider" if using. Here is where you find the bolts are rusted completely solid from spider to drum and require drilling out.
7 - remove bearings from casing (hence the need for the bearing removal tool)
8 - fit new bearings and rebuild machine (hence the need for the bearing fitting tool)

However I stopped at number 7 due to not having the right tools and I have no idea how much the right tools cost.

Trust me, take option one! £100 is a third of a new machine!

Hotpoint WMA35 - water will not empty and will not spin

Hi Debbie

Yes your machine will not spin if the water cannot drain... I do not have the machine in front of me but I would presume to think that you have a blockage in the water pump (or drain pump)

There is a normally a small pvc or plastic filter just before the pump and this would stop most big things entering the pump.. if not there could be a coin or button stuck in your pumps impeller.

Unfortunately if you are not technically inclined you will find it hard to access and open the pump otherwise just open the back plate on the machine (after removing the power socket from the wall) the pump is located at the bottom left and fairly easy to remove and open the plastic casing.

If this does not solve your problem please give more info........
