Re: locked out

Your newphew has password protected your laptop. You will need to get the password from him. Thinkpad BIOS hacking and cracking is big business. Because its next to impossible to break the code. There are thousands of websites that are dedicated to this little lock out function. If you go to Google search and type in 'Thinkpad BIOS Password Reset' nearly 2,000,000 (two million) websites are listed. Now you see where I'm coming from. I found a list of backdoor passwords but I'm not saying they'll work. You can call IBM's hotline from there website, they may know how to do this. The only sure bet you have now is your nephew which I'm glad I'm not in his shoes right now. You can try and research some of the websites and there solutions from the google search. I know these aren't the answers you want to hear but I hope that I've helped you out in some way. Good Luck to You. Standard BIOS backdoor passwords The first, less invasive, attempt to bypass a BIOS password is to try one of these standard manufacturer's backdoor passwords: AWARD BIOS AWARD SW, AWARD_SW, Award SW, AWARD PW, _award, awkward, J64, j256, j262, j332, j322, 01322222, 589589, 589721, 595595, 598598, HLT, SER, SKY_FOX, aLLy, aLLY, Condo, CONCAT, TTPTHA, aPAf, HLT, KDD, ZBAAACA, ZAAADA, ZJAAADC, djonet, %????? ?p??????%, %?????? ?p??????% AMI BIOS AMI, A.M.I., AMI SW, AMI_SW, BIOS, PASSWORD, HEWITT RAND, Oder Other passwords you may try (for AMI/AWARD or other BIOSes) LKWPETER, lkwpeter, BIOSTAR, biostar, BIOSSTAR, biosstar, ALFAROME, Syxz, Wodj

Can't get past lock code

Laptop computers have the advantage being portable and self-contained, but among their drawbacks is a keyboard without a separate number keypad. While for most applications number keypads are unnecessary, they can be useful for data entry. Laptops sometimes provide a number keypad by giving certain keys double duty, allowing them to enter numbers rather than letters when a "Number Lock" setting is turned on. Number Lock, however, can get turned on accidentally, or enabled by an operating system by default, which can really mess up your typing. If typing "M" ends up displaying a "0" on your screen, Number Lock is probably the problem.

Try to locate the function key. On a T-series ThinkPad, it's in the lower left hand corner. It should be labeled "Fn," and the lettering may be blue, green or red instead of white. If your laptop lacks a "Fn" key, use the "Shift" key for Step 3 below instead. Locate the key labeled with "NmLk". On a T-series ThinkPad it shares a key with "ScrLk" which sits on the very top row between the "PrtSc" and "Pause" keys. On other IBM laptops, the "NmLk" key might share a key with "Delete." While holding down the "Fn" key or the "Shift" key, depending on your model, press the "NmLk" key. This should turn off Number Lock and restore your keyboard to its usual state. Number Lock on an IBM laptop is a "toggle" setting. You can turn Number Lock on by following the same steps.

Compaq 6735s notebook pc goes to HP screen, but wont boot

First you need to determine how many blinks you are getting when you try to power on the laptop.
Check the blinking codes below and reason behind that for HP Compaq laptops

Blinking battery power LED Battery Insufficient charge on the battery
Blink: 1 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - CPU CPU not functional
Blink: 2 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - BIOS BIOS corruption failure
Blink: 3 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - Memory Module error not functional
Blink: 4 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - Graphics Graphics controller not functional
Blink: 5 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - System board General system board failure
Blink: 6 - Caps Lock/Num Lock - BIOS BIOS authentication failure

Plz get back so I can suggest you the steps to resolve the issue.

My laptop is locked and a lock symbol appears on top left corner on the screen

If you press Ctrl + Alt + del, does it bring up an unlock screen where you can enter your password? If not, can you press and hold the power button for 10 seconds to shut it down? Then power back on to restart.

Can't go to setup, shows a lock and monitor popout

The system password been set in the BIOS. There is no way to clear this. You need to find out who set it. On many systems there is a jumper inside the computer that can be reset but this is not the case with IBM laptops. It is a security feature that requires a new chip to be installed. The only alternative is to return it to IBM.

IBM T40 Laptop screen goes black, will not come back

First of all, you have to check whether you can see video signal with surrounding light tilting the screen.
If you can see dim image, all you have to do is replace back-light inverter or fix it. Usually, the fuse is open and you can connect it by simple soldering.
If you can't see dim image, it is another problems.
Give it a try.

Compaq Presario 1700 Laptop screen flickers and locks up

it sounds possibly that it is going into hibernation. a single press of the power button should bring it back alive.
also feel the bottom of the laptop.... if it is getting close to meltdown you need to clean the dust and dirt from the heatsinks. the fan area may appear to be clear but all the junk gets blown against copper heat sinks so you need to remove the covers to get at it.
