Question about Bissell 6594 PowerForce Bagless Upright Vacuum

Open Question

Bissell PowerForce Turbo: The motor spindle becomes very hot while spinning, causing the new belt to burn and break. Is this because the motor is overheating?

I've made sure that the filters, hoses, brushes are all clear of dirt and clogs. The motor spindle is indeed spinning. I put on a brand new (properly sized) belt on, and within one minute the belt began smoking and eventually broke due to the heat from the spindle. I unfortunately know that it's very hot due to touching it. I removed the cover to the motor to inspect the carbon brushes, which don't seem to be worn down. I did observe some white and yellow sparks between the copper rotator and the carbon brushes upon power-up, but not as bad as many youtube videos show as motor arcing. Is the motor just overheating? Could it be lack of airflow through the filters?

SOURCE: Brush is not rotating.

Turn the vac over, remove the access plate, covering the brush roll, 2 to 4 screws. Brush roll part number is 2032032if you need it, belt is a Bissell Style 7. While you have the brush roll off, check in dirt inlet to see if it is clogged, also check the hose to see if it is clogged. You won't feel suction at the bag tube, it has to have a bag on it and the lid closed before it will create suction.

SOURCE: Bissell Proheat 2x Series 8920 - Brush Belt Metal Shaft Sprocket won't turn

Most likely the brush motor is bad and not turning, part #2036757, would sell for around $23. To get to it, start taking out screws on the top cover, that motor is under the that top access cover.

SOURCE: Bissell upright vac, brush on bottom does not rotate

The front brush motor will not engage until the power is turned on and the handle is in the down position. In the upright position the brush motor wont engage. Typical faults will be the belt is broken and needs replacing or the fornt brush motor needs replacing.

The belt on my bissell powerforce compact keeps falling off the spindle. So its not moving the brush it stays on for a minute then falls off.

Either your belt has stretched beyond its specs or you have larger problems. Are you talking about a new belt? If not, try a new belt. If so, check to make sure the beater bar will spin freely without a belt attached. If it spins without a belt attached, make sure the bearing blocks at both ends are in good shape.

On a Kirby sentria the metal spool sticking out that goes into hose or power head becomes extremely hot and left burns marks on brush tube. It only gets hot when using power head. I checked all adjust

Check the brush roll to be sure it's spinning free too much drag can cause that to get hotter but usually it would break the belt. That spindle will get hot from the friction created by turning the belt and from the motor's heat. They'll just get hot, any brand that spindle will be hot after running it. It's just how it is.

Brush roller not spinning. belt, spindle okay. roller taken out and cleaned, no thread. replaced but no dice. ???

Use only BISSELL Style 10 Replacement Belts (#32074) in your BISSELL PowerForce Bagless.
  1. Unplug cleaner from electrical outlet.
  2. With Rotating Floor Brush removed from vacuum cleaner, grasp old Drive Belt and remove from Motor Pulley. Discard old Drive Belt.
  3. Place new Drive Belt over Motor Pulley and stretch other end over Rotating Floor Brush in the space between the bristles.
  4. Place ends of Rotating Floor Brush down into slots on sides as shown.
  5. Turn Rotating Floor Brush by hand several times in the direction of Motor Pulley. If properly installed, Drive Belt will center itself on Rotating Brush.
  6. Reposition Brush Cover and snap back into place. Check to be sure all three latches are secured.
  7. When you turn on the vacuum, do you see the motor that spins the belt spinning at the bottom? If not, it sounds like you may have a burned out motor.

Hair and dust build up under the end caps of the brush roll and cause friction. Replace the brush roll and belt. Be sure to clean the brush roll frequently after use.

I need help replacing my belt

Just changed mine. I have a Turbo Force 6585. Flip it over and press with your fingers on clip #s 2,3 and 4 (This releases the cover over the roller brush - The clip locations are labeled on the plastic cover). Remove the cover - this will expose the brush , belt and drive motor spindle. Pull the roller straight out (note one side of the roller has a "square peg" - its pretty obvious but you need to align it when replacing. Remove the belt and replace the new one over the silver motor spindle first and then the roller. You will see the area or Pulley (it is part of the roller brush itself) to put it on it is fairly obvious where it goes. Use the roller to stretch the belt and insert the roller back in and replace the cover.

Note; There have been several complaints about belts breaking prematurely on these models - I used a Homecare No. 1145 that is made to fit Panasonic Upright, Belt type UB / UB8 - This belt is about an 1/8 longer (much less tension) than the supplied one and it hasn't broken yet - Considering the factory supplied belt broke in 3 uses, I really don't care what Bissell recomends as this has been a common complaint with this mode on forums. Hope this helps

Belt keeps burning and breaking

Hello There,

It sounds like you need to replace the roller brush. If your Bissell is breaking belts that fast, then that can only really mean one of two things. The first being that the belts are not being properly installed, and the roller brush is pinching the belt which causes the belt to break, but after 3 belts I doubt this to be the case.

Probably the more likely problem is that the brush roller's bearing have seized up. You may test this by removing the roller brush from the vacuum, and holding it with on your two pointer fingers holding the outside bearing caps of the brush, making sure not to touch the actual part that spins. Now try to spin the brush while holding the bearing caps with your pointer fingers. The brush should spin freely, and should revolve around 5-6 times with each spin. If the brush doesn't spin easily, then this is going to put a lot more stress on the belt.

You may try to remove the bearing caps on the ends by twisting them off, and visually inspect each side to make sure there is no hair or thread that's lodged inside the bearing cap. This will make the brush hard to spin, and can cause you to burn belts quickly like you have been. You may find the bearing caps will not come off. This indicates that your brush roll has worn out the bearings completely, and the bearing caps have melted to the bearings due to extreme heat. You will then need to replace the roller brush if this is the case, and it maybe the best solution for you if you have burned through 3 belts so quickly.

The roller brush for your Bissell (I'm assuming this is yours as this is where the repair was posted on Fixya) 6594 PowerForce upright uses Bissell roller brush part number; 203-1195. Here's a link if you need to purchase one;
http://www.govacuum.com/biclandpobar.html

I have uploaded the parts schematic and owners manual to the main Fixya page for your model as well. Sometimes it can take 24 hours for Fixya to publish this data, but please visit the link to these documents in 24 hours or less;
http://www.fixya.com/support/p49887-bissell_6594_powerforce_bagless_upright#manuals.

If your roller brush is good, then examine where the brush rests inside of the vacuum cleaner, this is called the agitator housing. Look at the sides of the agitator housing where the bearing caps rest. Do you see any visible damage on either side? Sometimes the brush can get so hot, it may melt the agitator housing on the sides where the brush rests, this will also cause the belts to burn very quickly.

I hope that this information is helpful to you. If none of these suggestions fixed your vacuum, please just add a comment, or request a clarification request here on Fixya, and I'll be happy to respond. If this was helpful, please be sure to rate the repair by clicking on the 4 thumbs up icons in the upper right hand corner.

Thank you,

Chris J.
